For me, as part of the world, this has no significant effect. 

 

We have debt to pay. With the government shut down, we cannot pay the debt. If we can't pay the debt, other countries get shat on. This will affect more than just the US.

 

Hopefully they stop acting like children soon before this country falls to even more shit, and hurts other countries in the process.

On a more serious note however, I would like to revoke my American citizenship and move back to Germany if the worst case scenario occurs. I doubt it, but... it's the U.S., it's not like I can't expect it (double negative woo!).

Unfortunately I don't think, "I don't like my country anymore!" will get you citizenship in most countries.  But still, moving my ass to Canada is a possibility I must consider.   I'm iffy about those hate crime laws, but it's not like I'd ever do something like that anyway so it wouldn't affect me, and the US has plenty of laws I don't like anyway...
 

And I'm way to lazy to learn another language so Canada is looking very attractive right now.

Actually, I already have citizenship with Germany. I was born with dual citizenship, so I could technically just waltz into Germany with no problem. Well, no legal problems. I do need money for the trip. I have family in Germany, so I have a place to stay as well.

Yea, in 1995 and 1996. Yes, there was a month gap between two shutdowns, but the total amount of days between them was about 28 days. Difference between then and now is that the Republicans controlled the House and Senate then and both parties split Congress (Democrats the Senate and Republicans the House) now.

 

this probably signals the pit of where we are, and I think things will improve from here-on out.

 

Perhaps, considering Congress did pass a balanced budget from 1997 to 2001 (when George W. Bush was elected). Though, that didn't last long..

Oh, I know, I was referring to me.  I was born in the US and know absolutely nobody in any other nation so it'd be a bit difficult for me to pack up and leave.

ot: I'm not particularly sure how well a country shall run without a government, then again Americans are bat shit insane so I'm sure you'll pull through it without some cult spawning Cthulhu.

I noticed someone said "hardcore libs" - there are no hardcore liberals in America. You can't even be hardcore if you're a liberal. How is it possible to be a 'radical centrist'? America's problem is choice, or rather, the total lack of it. Center-right Democrats and far-right Republicans - your choice. It's impossible for anyone to be left-wing in America because the very term 'left-wing' is pejorative, by the nomenclature of the media. The lack of proportional representation in America means that politics will tend to the center if left unmolested, however, a long period of right-wing government has resulted in widespread corruption and a virulent cultural hegemony. America will remain deeply flawed until its constitutional values are respected once more.

I just wish Congress would not get paid while they're not doing anything instead of continuing to make money while all the people they sent home don't.

The reason they still get paid is to make sure Congress isn't made up of only rich people. Allow me a second to explain before you "remind" me that Congress already IS made up of only rich people:

Basically, Congress is supposed to be a full time job. If you have to go take up a job at Walmart just to make ends meet then you're likely to be biased towards what gets funded. "Raise in Walmart wages? Oh yes!"

So they're paid extremely well, with the assumption that the lack of money doesn't cloud their judgment.

But if they weren't paid during a government shutdown, the less-wealthy would be much quicker to "compromise", but that in turn would be a bad thing in that the rich members of the house who don't need the money as bad could just put in ridiculous provisions and the less-financially-well-off Senators would probably approve it because they're just starving for money at this point.

Of course, I don't think any senators are that financially unsound, but this was just the logic behind the rules when they were first made anyway.

This is why I don't want to live in America... 

 

If one good thing can come out of this: with no government my human sacrifices and baby manufacturing plant aren't illegal anymore.

As much as I'd like to sacrifice a couple babies and commit mass murder, I'm fairly sure the police are still active. And even if they aren't, not many people would stand for baby sacking.

Nobody wants to cooperate, just to push their agenda without hearing the other side's story.  This two-party tug-of-war is ruining us, but nobody dares stop staunchly supporting their party for fear they lose the tug-of-war match and wind up in the mud.
