Divination

Organized Chaos

Psychics, Prophets, Diviners, whatever you wish to call them, seem strange in the eye of many. They are often viewed as cheats, deceitful and just plain lying.

I personally am okay with it. If it gives people hope towards the future, that's okay. Even if it's wrong, it can still help people strive to achieve goals more than other means. When it is used for exploitation, is when it is not okay. People who just use it for money, seem like horrible parasites who prey on the weakness and fear of others.

Do I think it works? In a way. Stuff like Tarot Cards always reminds me of Minority Report; Sometimes, even though we can see into the "future", what we do to achieve that future can often destroy it, making it pointless. I believe it acts as a good inspiration/motivation tool as it gives people a goal to work towards. However, I feel there are better alternatives such as Counselling and Personal Conversations which can be more specifically channeled into effective uses of time and energy, to achieve those goals. I don't think it should be completely disbanded, as some people are simply more okay with the prospect of something supernatural/beyond themselves while others can achieve better with the aforementioned techniques.

So what is YCM's opinion on the practice of looking into the future? Do you believe in it? Or do you think it is just a load of rubbish?

I believe that very few things are absolute, as I don't believe time is a tangible thing.  I'm not atheist, but I remain very skeptical towards stuff like this, especially when there is profit to be had.  It's the same reason I outright dismiss faith healers.  If you're making money, you have a reason to lie.

Most of the time, I believe it happens because you believe in it (like the placebo effect and medication. Where a group of patients were given a medicine and another a sugar tablet, because the 2nd group believed they got the medicine, they actually got some of the benefits).

I can't stand those who take advantage of people who are in a vulnerable situation for monetary gain, to say something is working when no matter how much the person believes it will never work.

Talking to the dead I suppose isn't so bad, because the person can then feel at ease, even if deep down they know it wasn't their dead relative/friend who said it, but it's when this is exploited. Randall And Hopkirk (Deceased) - 1969/70 - covered a few of these such as Jeanne being made to believe her dead husband was haunting her by two brothers and them convincing her to sending clients her way for their medium service. Of course he wasn't haunting her, Marty was haunting Jeff.

I like the theory and intricate backgrounds behind it such as the Major Arcana for exmaple, but I don't buy it since the genericness of fortunes can be said for anyone. And it does go that fate is determined by your actions, not by the words of another person. But if it's for the effort of moral guidance and support then that's totally fine.

People go to psychics and the divine to essentially relieve their doubts; if you don't have faith in yourself, you look for faith in something greater than yourself. This is pretty much how religion works.

The problem is that while psychic mediums and prophets have their benefits, the only results that I could expect would be:

- Psychological guidance
- Exploitation

I'd rather go to a psychologist, therapist or counsellor for this sort of thing, because they're trained and qualified, and I'd really recommend everyone to if they had issues, rather than a psychic. But that will never happen, for the same reason we even buy lottery tickets. We believe in luck and fate and things like that.

While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I see this as fraudulent, people who believe themselves to have this ability as delusional, and people who are encouraged by this on par with any person encouraged by a random figure plucked out of the air.

Mind you, unless asked I wouldn't blatantly proclaim this for everyone to hear - and there's no shame in having fun doing it, either. I'd just rather guess work be free, since anyone can do it.
