Return from the Dead - Chance Format Discussion Thread (In Search of a Banlist)

Recommended Posts

Ah, its so good to be back YCM :) VERY good to be back. At least from time to time XD. After about...what? 3-4 months of not being here I have returned and I bring my very first format back from the dead with me, and maybe I'll even host tournies again too (but not just yet).
To ensure a fairer game via hammering new decks to a reasonably balanced level through the use of Deck Limitations and a heavier ban list and involve more skillful play in the game.

However! A little Chaos is never a bad thing, so unlike the original, the limits have been lifted somewhat generously, so you guys may choose more of the power or key cards you'll need for combos or to switch the tide of the duel. We will edit/discuss what goes on the lists or what cards present problems in this format with given time.

Main AND Extra Deck Combined may only contain the following:

 • 0 to 2 GGer
 • 0 to 4 Limited Cards
 • 0 to 6 Skill Cards
 • 0 to 8 Supporting Cards
 • 0 to 3 of ONLY 1 UNLIMITED CARD
 • All other cards may now only be run at 2 MAX (hence why only 1 unlimited card is at 3).
 • EXTRA DECK MONSTERS HAVE SUMMON SICKNESS (Cannot declare an attack the turn they are Summoned from the EXTRA Deck.)

I actually what to see you guys think on this one. I want to see opinions as to what should and shouldn't be here...but at least let me set 1 standard for what kind of card deserves to be in the 6 categories.

Banned: If a card absolutely breaks the game unfairly to 1 player almost 95% of the time, is a very tedious game condition (cough cough, Exodia/Countdown), etc etc. Herp derp, drop and win? No ty.

Limited: Cards that have serious power, but that are a decent threat if put to 1. Take the Dragon Rulers for example. In multiples, they are menacing for most decks, but put them all to 1, and you get a more think-hardy dragon deck that eats up its resources.

Skill Cards: Cards that have a profound influence on the game and that at 3 would tilt the scales to 1 player, but can be perfectly fine at 2. Example is all the Searchers in the Game. There are never going to be any Searchers at 3 in Chance Format, and all of them HAVE to be Skill cards or higher. Like for Example, Stratos could be perfectly fine in this format, but it's never going be any more than 1.

Support Cards: The Quality Control Group. Cards like Forbidden Lance, Book of Moon, etc that should be within restriction of use, but at the least. Limiting 8 Quality Control cards gives you the tools you need to disrupt strategies, gameplays, etc, but they are now limited to about 8 making you think whether you should use this card in certain occasions. THIS CAN AND HAS OFTEN changed the tide of the game in the past, especially when we had books at 2.

UNLIMITED: The troops of your deck :)
Well, with that said, how about we start this format once more!

So:

MAIN ON GOING TOPIC: CREATION OF A BAN LIST

All YCM Rules apply, now lets get this show on the road!

It seems like an attempt to build a list based on community opinion and then apply arbitrary rules to that list to slow the game down even further.

You talk like the game being slow is a bad thing. I feel that slower formats with less OTK potential are more enjoyable.

He was saying it in regards to how convoluted, over done, and badly made Chance format is.

Anyways, I will admit that even in the context of just for fun and to be different, it becomes a chore when you complicate things this much for a banlist. When I had originally suggested the changes which (I'm assuming) led to this sort of thing where there would be separate cards not counted for the Limited limits, I wasn't thinking it would be taken to this sort of extent. I'm not really interested in participating in it, myself.

Personally, I have to agree with this.

The chore comes where there's a ton of lists to follow. It's over-complicating things. It's kind of hard to keep looking at the list back and forth and analyzing what's on this side of limited and what's on that side of semi-limited, or if there are special x3 slots or IDK.

A custom banlist plain and simple would be good enough, IMO, and the slots back in "x1 limited, x2 semi, x3 of something". If we run into the problem of having list cards not being used, well maybe it's for a good reason, or maybe x card doesn't need the list position in this format. Who cares for what unrated section we have to use to play the format on DN if it happened like that?

Even with this simplified view of mine, it'd probably go above some people's willingness to come try it.

The complexity in a game can only go so far before players start getting driven away.

Other than that, welcome back. Missed seeing you around.
