Tentacruel
America has got its fair share of problems, but a lot of s*** it gets is outright ignorant. My biggest problem with the US (and I'm not sure how big of a problem this is in other places) is how polarized the politics are. You've got one side, that's like what Lord Cow said. Obama's terrible, kill the gays, **** other countries. Then you've got the other side. Tolerate everyone but those inbred rednecks, religion is inherently evil, ban all the guns. IMO, it's partially the government's fault. They encourage it.

This is new to me as a non-American but I have to say it is rather interesting since its basically the opposite of what we have in the UK. Every major party is pretty much identical and most of them don't have clear viewpoints any more anyway so everyone just completely loses interest as the outcome will always be the same; an incompetent bunch of vote-winning power hungry liars with no interest in the people of their country. Not really different here, they just lie differently. Liberals swear up and down they want tax cuts for the rich and to help the poor out Instead they are actually more wealthy than most Conservatives, actively seek tax cuts for themselves, and try to shove the poor into a corner so they can reap the votes they "sowed" when the time comes. Conservatives swear they're trying to uphold family values and constantly put down values that aren't conservative that they "personally" pick to crusade against, out of a hat. In actuality, they couldn't give fewer f***s, just want money, and are often caught with their pants down for homosexual activities, cheating, etc. I mean I'm sure some people in there actually care, but this is the sad majority. Summed it up better than I did. We've got net neutrality and other serious issues but all people care about is gay marriage. The politicians use social issues as scapegoats and to get votes. Cin
Islam isn't a dark force. So I consider that post incorrect and potentially offensive to Muslims. It's the minority who take it to the extreme that are a dark force, but that happens with every religion and with any country. It's just the sheer numbers who follow Islam that make it more likely to see extremists. Europe isn't a dark force either. If I was actually remotely patriotic which I'm not, I would be offended. Flash Flyer - Sakura
I never once thought that just because I live in America, our country is superior to the rest of the world in every aspect. While granted, the USA is ahead of the rest of the world in certain aspects (such as we got a man to the moon first), other areas, we're falling. Education-wise, we're not in the top 10 last time I checked (think somewhere near the middle/bottom of all civilized countries). Going with historical things, America has imposed its values and religion on a lot of other nations and other sovereign areas throughout the passage of time. A good example would be over here in Hawaiʻi 121 years ago (with the overthrow/annexation of our islands). While Clinton did apologize for what the USA did back then in 1993, it goes without saying that many people who are descended from natives are still upset & wish to withdraw from the USA (and have it restored, though that's a select few of our population that wants it; even some of the Hawaiians here think it's a bad idea to go back to the old ways). I won't go into further detail, but needless to say that the government, past and future, has gotten their noses into matters that we shouldn't have been involved with. That in turn has led to some countries/populations having dislike for the USA, all because of what our government [and a few people who wanted to invade the Middle East] decided to do back in '02-03. While America was theoretically based on Christian/Catholic principles, several states here have gay marriage which run contrary to the principles; Hawaiʻi recently legalized it this past November/December. Despite that, as Poison mentioned, a lot of Americans are actually tolerant of other cultures/such; just that those few people in office (and several prominent politicans/celebrities or whoever) decide to blow things out of proportion and make the whole population look bad. Contrary to what some people think of America, not all of us are overweight (mind you, I'm relatively skinny for my height/age range; compared to some of my peers, but it's genetics). @J-Max: You could always come here if you ever vacation in the USA. While some locals here dislike mainlanders (meaning people from the continental US; I sincerely apologize if anyone was offended), since a few of them show little/no respect for our traditions and culture. We have a fair amount of British citizens living here though; one of my last college professors is a Brit [and I liked him (as a teacher)], so you should be okay if you come here. Not sure about our crime rate here, but I don't hear much about it so I'd assume it's doing well (we don't have mass shootings like Detroit/LA). We also have constant climate [doesn't snow however, except on that one mountain at the southeast of the chain, but we don't have heat waves]. If you're lucky, you might run into Icy. I understand that Islam and Muslims are not the "Dark Force" as you put it but after 9/11, things were changed forever. Osama Bin Laden was all over the news and people were made to believe that Muslims were pure evil. Ask anyone back a few years what they thought a Terrorist looked like. They would decribe a Muslim man or a Islam woman in a Burka. Did you know that even today in the UK, if a woman is walking down the street ina Burka, people avoid that person like the Plague.... Because they are afraid. London had its own Tube Bombings a few years back that rekindled the hatred for Muslims and Islam. As I said, I have always appriciated culture in the world but you also have to understand how other people feel.

Ignorance is ignorance and should never be rationalized in any way shape or form. You know who else we considered to be "pure evil"? The Japanese after the attack on Pearl Harbor. You know what we did to the Japanese-American residents during the time? We fucking shoveled them into interment camps like rats with the exact rational that you're sporting. We ruined the livelihood of innocent people simply out of fear and ignorance. You claim that after 9/11 things were "changed forever": please shut the fuck up. As a New York City resident I can honestly say I know people who've legitimately lost family members in the incident that do not have the negative rationale you do. The fact of the matter is: no, things weren't changed forever, individuals have always fucked shit up for the majority and it'll always be that way. Our job is to not rationalize stupidity and instead understand that one person's ideals does not constitute another's.
Cin
9/11 just brought the extremism to America's doors, that's the only thing that changed, because of that incident it's more widely publicized than before, didn't mean it didn't happen before 9/11 though. I don't avoid people wearing Burkas like the plague (I'm more curious really than anything), I think that is far too discriminatory a thing to say, both to the Muslim women and it tries to show the British as narrow minded which we aren't. People dislike things because they don't understand it, that's why Religious Education lessons try to include many religions. To remind people what the religion really stands for, rather than extreme examples we end up using to label a whole religion. We forget humans will find a whole host of reasons to kill each other. It's human nature and religion just to be one most people seem to link to acts of mass murder. It's not the excuse the Germans used exclusively and it won't be the exclusively used in the future ones. Anyhow I don't like the Anti-Muslim messages that seem to be coming through this topic, so move back to the topic.

Lunar Origins
BACK TO AMERICA TIME. A lot of America's patriotism is based simply on the fact that we're pretty much taught that America is the most badass thing in existence from a very young age - understandable, as that's completely true because we are simply the best. How many of you other plebeian countries invented the sandwich? Guns? Hamburgers? French Fries? FREEDOM? The Constitution? Democracy? That's right. You didn't. America did. America is king. And if you're smart, you would know that this was sarcasm, but so many damn people are taking this thread seriously that I feel the need to say this. On topic, real talk, is the actual budget debt that we possess right now, sitting at a relatively light... ...oh. Well, that can't all be bad, right? Wrong, you say? Won't that debt utterly crush our economy, and, by extension, the world's one it collapses in on itself? Shouldn't we be thinking about the future generations who we are going to be passing this debt onto? What are their lives going to be like? The answer is: they're probably going to be fine. Add that to the fact that our current generation is filled to the brim with bright people - according to statistics, we are the smartest and most responsible generation in history. That's certainly food for thought.
