Number 16: Shock Master

Recommended Posts

Funny. Ever since the OCG/TCG split, I've been very happy with the TCG banlist and often perplexed by the OCG's changes. Shock Master being killed off promptly in the TCG ranks up there with the single best TCG list decisions ever.

The more prevalent Rank 4 archetypes become, the more dangerous this card is.

Isn't that applied to a number of non-anime cards as well?

Pretty much. Even stuff in the grey areas ends up lumped into one due to comparison.

Also, I actually like this guy. Ideally, he's what 3-material Rank 4s should be; amazing effect that makes up for the extra material.

Except for the part where going first allows you to decide the game.

NO, NOOOOO! MAKE THE MEMORIES STOP! MAKE THEM STOP!

Never, never come back. Don't come back. No one wants you Shock Master, no one WANTS YOU! I sang a song when you were banned. I sang it long and hard. Never come back, never come back.

Why am I suddenly no one?

because anyone that wans "you can't play yugioh lawl" back clearly doesn't have an opinion that matters in regards to cards that break the game

I like to believe the decks that make them break the game. Nut then again, Since I run a rogue deck, my sole reason for liking this card was turning to the meta and giving it a hardy **** you.

This card had to be banned because come on! Did you see what the format was like when it happened? Dragon Rulers were like 30/10 ratio in favor of monsters, and Spellbooks were equally extreme in favor of maining Spells. Even after that format ended, there's a constant in Yugioh:

Decks will often have a style that favors them using a certain kind of card at all times, and their outs often need those same ones to work out of a tight spot. Unbaning Shock Master at any point will force them back into more equal ratios of card kinds in the main deck when thinking about making archetypes that do not immediately lose in a Shock Master scenario. Which I do believe Konami is capable of eventually creating that kind of environment, much more in the near future since they are focusing on carrying over all past mechanics of the game. Though, as of now, definitely Shock Master is unfair and stupid. It takes calling the right thing against the right decks to seal your opponent until you are ahead enough to guarantee you are gonna win. Even if limited, that just makes Number 69 have a reason to be used as a second copy, which is not as hard to do as it looks, and makes me pretty much scratch the possibility of Shock Master ever coming back even if all decks in the game had a balanced ratio of Spell/Trap/Monster Cards.....

Now I am starting to think that Shock Master should have been a 4 material that needs 3 detached cards to work.....

Considering we're getting an archetype dedicated to a similar kind of strategy (Shaddolls), and we got Majesty's Fiend (one of the best Tribute monsters out there IMO), and Heralds, the very definition of "You can't play", are getting support over numerous other themes out there that need it, AND we got "And the Band Played On", I think I can safely say that "You can't play" cards aren't going away anytime soon, with or without Shock Master's presence.

Shock Master's issue is that he was (and still is in the OCG apparently) actually powerful enough to be relevant.

Good Shaddoll players don't sit on Midrash 24/7 so not a true point

Majesty's fiend is a point, but it's not a toolboxable answer to any 1/3rd of the game on demand

Heralds are a point but no intelligent player defends those, and thus his point remains moot.

And the Band Played On isn't really comparable. Floodgate yes, but not close to power of others.

No, 3 Materials is still fine, because Shock is still a -2 to play, and it's ATK isn't really that impressive.
But you are correct, for the fact you want Shock to be something like Ark/etc, in the sense that you have to detach 2 to do anything with it, and just renders it as a 1-turn block for 1 type of Card.
Current version; No. 3 turns of purely blocking out [x] can and will cripple anything. 1 turn... It's a stretch, but it's not as rage inducing as it currently is.
Or at least, the way I see it.
