Goyo Guardian

Recommended Posts

I'm actually happy about this card coming back. The game has been screaming for a good Level 6 for so long now. Also since Stardust isn't the be all and end all of the game like it was at this card's prime, it won't be quite as ridiculous as before. The card still has stupidly high ATK for its effect to be balanced, but its better than having to run Powered Inzektron. Also, Mirror Force and D-Prison both at 3 might just do something to lessen its impact.

this move is a lot like the BLS thing back in the day.

Not nearly as powerful as BLS was when it first came back.

And it's not a card that should cause non-Synchro decks to find ways to bring it out, while still somehow remaining competitive, like BLS did.

It won't be a gamechanger, no. But it will be powerful, and I don't like that they've brought it back whatsoever.

I mean, this is mostly relevant in terms of Yang Zing and Shaddolls.

Yang Zing, while not quite up to snuff pre-DUEA Exclusives + pre-NECH, can still spit out a 3300 Goyo that's immune to spells OR a 2800 Goyo that's immune to battle and traps.

Shaddolls never had a worthwhile 6, despite it being easy to do. Say hi.

I meant because it's a selling point, not just because of its niche.

i love goyo. it's amazingly fun, it's such an interesting concept that can lead to loads of cool stuff happening. i was gutted when it was banned and i'm over the moon now. it's powerful, it's arguably broken but i think it's worth having a card that's borderline imbalanced just for the fun and variety goyo brings to the game.

While I'm still on the fence on whether bringing back Goyo was an acceptable thing to do, it's worth noting that Goyo was ridiculously powerful during the Synchro era because it was a Level 6 (relatively easy to Summon), with ATK that easily outmatched most other monsters, and then stole the monsters it killed. The revived monster is not tied to Goyo the way other "revive what you killed" monsters do (Brain Crusher, Red-Eyes Zombie), so that destroying Goyo doesn't affect the stolen monsters.

It also gave full access to the stolen monsters' effects, so you could use a stolen Stardust's effect, and then next turn, kill it again when your opponent revived it, and get it back. And since Synchro monsters was the main boss monster in most Decks, you were also stealing potential Synchro Material for more Synchro Summons while your opponent desperately attempted to turtle.

But during the Xyz era, Goyo isn't QUITE as useful. Stealing Xyz monsters, while useful, is not as ridiculous because most Xyz have only average stats, and their effects are usually bound to their Overlay Units, which they won't have after being killed by battle. There's also the matter that Synchros require Tuners to be run, and not every Deck runs Tuners.

But the ones that do will definitely make use of this evil thing.
