"Beatdown" Game Mode

Thought about this recently.

 

Alternate Game Mode: Beatdown

 

Conditions:

- Monsters cannot be removed from the field by card effects, except by their own effects.

- "Cannot be destroyed by battle" effects are negated by game mechanics.

- However, monster effects and Summons can still be negated.

 

Basically the only way to remove monsters in this mode is through battle and raw power (ATK). Removal backrow become obsolete, while backrow that raise or lower stats, stop attacks or change positions take their place. S.H.Ark, Blackship, etc. won't help you here, while Pearl arguably becomes one of the best generic Rank4s. Castel will still be relevant by being able to target Spell/Traps and, interestingly, by using its first effect.

 

Which archetypes or decks would benefit the most from this format/game mode? How the metagame would look like?

Personally, I see Fire Fists taking the lead (with Tensen and possibly Horn of Phantom Beast) along Good old Barbaros Skill Drain. But I suspect that OTK and Synchro-centric decks could become a problem.

Going on a blast to the past to the time where beatdown was the Deck to run. Red Dragon Archfiend's downside no longer exists. Heh.

 

I feel that Bujins and Blackwings should fit somewhere within the top tiers, what with the Decks having a fair bit of combat tricks to their name.

 

Anti-attack locks might become an issue. If the opponent lands a combination of Solar Flare Dragons or Marauding Captains or anything similar, it's nigh-on impossible to bypass it.

That was the idea: Make the old beatdown decks relevant again.

 

You have a point with the anti-attack abuse. Perhaps those could be negated/disabled as well and rely on base DEF to, well, defending?

That's a good point, didn't think about them. Removal of monsters by their own effects should be enabled the prevent that kind of abuse. I will fix that right away.
