CLG Klavier
TBH, I could see Channel as the Spirit mechanic. Gives a nice feel of them being nonmaterial beings without jumping on the Enchantment Creature deal Theros did.
Gokai-Red
I know it may kinda early to post cards examples BUT..I might do so just this time to allow me to explain well, some interesting mechanic I was wanting to introduce here. Random Human Trainee (CMC 1) Creature - Human As long as RHT is a Samurai it gain Bushido (Number) (And gains X,Y,Z, or whatever ability). Cost: RHT becomes a Samurai 1/1 Now see, this seems pretty fun with the idea of having a conflict picking sides...call it Gaining a Title...so when you side with one side you get benefits and stuff from it. Course this mechanic can make random Dudes become othere classes (There are a bunch of Monks in Kamaigawa for example) and this would work harder for Ninjas, BUT...that might be because it is harder to become one? CLG Klavier
Huh. This...this sounds like a pretty cool idea. More flavorful rendition of "COST: ~ gains Bushido 1" and would work with possible tribal stuff. I like it!
Poc
You would need a counter or something similar to signify it has changed it's creature type. Otherwise you'll have memory issues and those are really bad. That or just make it an EOT clause.
CLG Klavier
It's similiar to Monstrous, which was a perfectly fine thing. It's not THAT hard to remember who activated their ability, really.
.Rai
Much more difficult to track than Monstrosity, and I had my doubts about Monstrosity.
CLG Klavier
Could be until end of turn then or something. I mean, imagine that kind of a mechanic with cards like "Enchanted creature becomes a Samurai".
Poc
Monstrous puts counters on the creature, you want to avoid memory issues as much as possible otherwise you end up with weird rulings and unintended interactions.
Gokai-Red
It is more similar to Figure of Destiny than mounstrosity tbh...
CLG Klavier
So, what do you guys think about Channel making a return as well? It's not a bad mechanic honestly, in my opinion at least. We can find something else for Spirits if no.
Poc
Channel is a good mechanic, it just needs some better design applied to it, obviously it works perfectly for a reanimator strategy or ways to recur cards from the graveyard. Gokai-Red
Plus has a flavor Nod to the idea of Ninjas and Samurai wanting to channel spirit energy to destroy one another, (Bestow also would work well with that idea)
CLG Klavier
It also makes cards dual-purpose - can be either on field OR be secretly used from hand, so it fits the theme of Spirits being more neutral, as Samurais will be about the board and Ninjas more about secrecy and tricks. Gokai-Red
1 more thing...aren't we test this stuff in cockatrice r something...if so My mechanic isn't that hard to keep track off...we have notes there EDIT: Still note that it is not intended to ocupy much space on the set a horizontal cycle might be well enought for it to show up. Rodrigo
Really like the idea of Luis. It's like Level Up + Monstrosity but flavorfully accurate for the set.
.Rai
It also however implies that there are neutral factions on the plane. Which there aren't. Otherwise, you want it flavourfully to represent training a creature. If so, just bring back level up. That has a lot of untapped design space. CLG Klavier
Well, neutral factions no, but, there are neutral PEOPLE. Like there are Guildless on Ravnica.

Well considering that it is a Ninja vs Samurai matters set, and there are plenty of other "tribes" in Kamigawa, you can consider all of those as Neutral. Most likely coz this is an isolated conflict between 2 factions more than a Plane Level threat. (It also draws some design space for an expantion on this theme in future sets where we can keep checking other sides of the plane too)
.Rai
There aren't many other tribes on Kamigawa though. And of the few that are, how of those are going to be creatures that will turn into a Samurai or Ninja? It's a very specific piece of flavour that shouldn't appear on more than two cards at maximum. Otherwise, we're going to end up with about 10 generic Samurai trainees, and 10 generic Ninja trainees.
CLG Klavier
Yeah, Rai's kinda right here.

I never said this thing was limited to Samurais and Ninjas There are Shamans, Warriors, Wizards, Monks, heck you can even put that thing into a Beast and turn it into a Spirit Beast with that...there is a lot of space to use it for. And of course...a nice 1 Class per Color (With maybe a few oddballs like Beast to Spirit and/or Regular dude into Legendary Status) is more than enough to showcase it. .Rai
Too memory-intensive. If you start branching out into lots of different classes, that's some serious bookkeeping you're having to do. Even two types of classes to remember require two types of counter already: you've suggested a theoretical 7 at the moment. The good thing about Monstrosity was that it piggybacked off of +1/+1 counters; for all of its' fancy lingo about monstrous things, it was essentially a +1/+1 counter lord mechanic. The other thing is that this is all achievable using Level up much more elegantly. CLG Klavier
Well, Level Up is certainly an interesting mechanic, it has a lot of unexplored space. We could go with it here!
Rodrigo
Agreed. Level Up it is! Will be awesome to make more cool cards with that mechanic~
