Kindness

I once gave a homeless guy a buck.  That's my good deed for the next ten years.

I was going to make a joke, but everyone would come here and slaughter me for my terrible human being-ness.

This year, we had to make a full-scale event in college, and one of the side tasks was to make a social campaign. We chose book donations to orphan kids. In 2 weeks, we raised 2300 books.

A young guy, around 14, came into work once and ordered a Tall Vanilla Bean Frap and payed with a 10$ bill. He sat down to drink it, then before leaving he put the $5 is given him in change into our tip box. It was really touching and a very kind gesture.

$5 for a coffee? That was probably a protest against the extortionate price.

I sat with a peruvian street artist as I came back from school. The guy was chalking a portrait on the sidewalk. We talked for about two hours, got him ice cream, and had dinner at his place. That was a good day really.

There's also the theory that any act of kindness is ultimately out of self-satisfaction but I don't believe that.

I don't either, I can think of a few instances where I did the right/kind thing while kicking myself inside.

I have this friend Ryan who's one of the kindest people I know. He'll always show support for our friends by going to events we're in, going out of his way to take me to the bank and get Smash U, and most recently he helped organize our friend group in getting a wedding gift for one of our friends. Amongst many other things.

When I visit my grandmother I try to clean up the graves around her, and maybe even plant some flowers on the other ones too.

I like to do that when I visit my mom.

We, as a race, seek to satisfy ourselves however we can. When we help someone or do something, we are doing something totally for another person, receiving nothing in return, except that person's kindness. When we stop to care about others, we can accomplish so much more than when we focus on feeding our appetites.

I agree.

That may well be true, but even if it is, I don't think it devalues the act in any way. Look at it like this: you could gain self-satisfaction whilst helping someone else, or you could gain it through making things worse for a person. It's still an active choice on your part.
