[TCG] ITT: Black Makes a Banlist

Recommended Posts

Actually, I lied, it's not a full banlist, as that would be way too long and take far too much time. Just a few things I think should be done/discussed. Not going to hit Qli/Doll/BA/Nekroz/etc., OCG cards like Infinity/Noden/enablers, or obvious shit like Raigeki. Just eneric/engine card changes I think are healthy for the future of the game.

Banned:
Blackwing - Zephyros the Elite: This card is too good while Pendulums exist. We only have 1 deck on the horizon that can truly abuse it, but when it gets rolling, this guy's going to be stronger than Glow-Up Bulb or Spore ever were. A wary hit, if anything.
Denko Sekka: Walking cold wave that degenerates the game state. Don't think I need to say too much.
Djinn Releaser of Rituals: Yeah, I don't like the idea of a one-sided vanity monster existing. It's technically a Nekroz 'hit', but I just think that keeping it around is more trouble than it's worth, and will just hurt the gamestate the next time Rituals get good again.
Blaze Fenix, the Burning Bombardment Bird: Well, it's an FTK card... That's about it. There was an FTK that got pre-emptively hit fairly recently, and I just dislike of keeping this guy in the gamestate.
Dewloren, Tiger King of the Ice Barrier: FTK gonna FTK. This is a rare case where I'd be satisfied with an Errata, but it would need to truly restrict it.
Lavalval Chain: This fucker is stupid. If Armageddon Knight and Mathematician aren't fair cards in the game, how is a loopable, toolboxable one with a second effect any better? It's just... dumb. This card has led to far too many degenerate decks and combos, and I want to see it gone. It simply does not better the gamestate in any way.
Number 66: Master Key Beetle: This card's always been a dumb card, most notably for Vanity's abuse, but the interaction it has on the horizon is enough of an argument for it to get a preemptive ban in my book. Shouldn't have existed, shouldn't continue to exist.
Soul Charge: It's a topdeck card that does way too much. It's not as potent a topdeck card as Monster Reborn, I just don't feel it's healthy to keep a generic Rekindling around, regardless of the fact that it costs life to use it. We have plenty of revival cards that are more fair, and this is just not one of those.
Temple of the Kings: I don't think the errata did enough. Truly, I don't. Testing it just a little makes it feel like it's too good for decks like Tellar/Yosenju/etc., and I dislike the idea of making backrow heavy more proactive for no real downside. That's just me, though.

Limited:
Armageddon Knight: I think it's just getting to be too toolboxy. Shaddoll Dragon, Farfa, Zephyros, and so on. It has a ton of utility, and much like Foolish Burial, I think it's just a bit too much. I still think he's a cool guy, but I think the OCG was correct in moving it to 1 and keeping it there. Also RotA exists.
Kuribandit: This is a bit different. The reason that this card has never been as good in the TCG as the OCG is that Pot of Avarice is banned. We're getting Jar of Avarice soon, and while that's not as good as its Spell brother, I dislike the idea of this card freely running around. Maybe I'm wrong, but I did say I was trying to hit generic/engine cards more than anything, and I think this is one that does a bit too much.
Lonefire Blossom: After experiencing 3 of this, despite it not being top tier, it is just awful for the game. This card is too strong for being Semi'd, in my eyes, much less go up to 3. It makes plants either way weaker than they need to be (Aromages, atm) or way stronger than they deserve to be (Sylvan, in a vacuum) by existing, especially at higher numbers. It would be one thing if it couldn't grab itself for future revivals, but it can. Even without self-interaction, it would still be stronger than it rightfully should be.
Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands: This is an iffy one. I just hit it because it's a Stratos for rituals in general. It's not inherently broken, but I feel that cards like this shouldn't really be free to roam.
Mathematician: See Armageddon Knight, but it's much more generic. It has some stuff on the horizon that might push it over the edge, but it's always been a card I feel should be limited, even moreso than arma. That is, until recently...
Book of Eclipse: This is a weird one. I don't think this is a broken card by any means, but I think it's only going to get better with time. Even in the undermeta nowadays, this card is bananas. It's extra copies of book of moon that, in most cases, isn't worse by more than a single percent. Yeah, the draw is a drawback, but you use it when you have to, and that usage will greatly increase your chances of winning the game. That is, unless you're already dead, anyways.
Charge of the Light Brigade: Generic deck thin RotA doesn't seem healthy. LS don't deserve this, nor does an LS engine deserve this, to go higher than 1. Stay at 1 like RotAs should.
Hieratic Seal of Convocation: See Charge of the Light Brigade. Except this one just encourages OTKing for a slightly more narrow avenue. Also getting better on the horizon. Actually, constantly getting better, so IDK why Konami keeps raising it up when it should go down.
Reinforcement of the Army: I... do I need to explain this?
Mind Drain: I don't think any of the drains are genuinely healthy for the game. We shouldn't need these types of floodgates to mitigate the game, the game just shouldn't get to the point that these are as good as Skill Drain and Soul Drain managed to get to.
Mistake: See Mind Drain.

Semi-Limited:
Fire Formation - Tenki: This... is an odd one. I don't think Tenki is as bad as the other RotAs. I'm not even sure it should be Semi'd. Yeah, it's powerful, but unless you run Bear, which is potentially dead unless you either run fists or use a larger engine, it has a serious drawback; Wasting an S/T slot. It's also among the easiest to answer, though that alone isn't an argument for it being better. There are some decks where this isn't the case, but for the most part, it is a genuine drawback, especially after multiples. So, yeah, idk if this is a 2 or 3 card.
Bottomless Trap Hole: This has been a long time coming. We need more generic backrow back, and this card is the one most deserving of moving up. I don't think it needs to go to 3, but it definitely deserves to be back at 2.
Torrential Tribute: Another one IDK, but moreso because I'm not sure it can move up. Stratos (who idgaf about) and BTH are the only cards on the list I think are healthy decisions to move up. I'm on the fence here. On one hand, it's terrible right now... On the other hand, a card being bad is not a reason for it to move up, in theory. In addition, we do need more generic backrow, but I'm not sure this is the way we need it. We already have 3 Mirror Force, 2 Dark Hole, and 1 Raigeki (different argument for those altogether), so more seems like... overkill? A bad idea? IDK, it's the most deserving trap that isn't BTH, but not sure it's deserving enough.

Again, not touching shit like Raigeki or OCG-only stuff with a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole.

EDIT: I had forgotten Mistake. Fixed now.

These cards are not the problem, I've never seen them as a problem.

Errata the Igknights (or really, just say that this combo doesn't work) instead.

Uh, they are though. I'm not arguing against Igknights being problems, but there are such things as multiple problems.

Zephyros is already better than Spore/GUB, and it's only getting better each set. Igknights are just the first example of such.

Key Beetle has always been a hated card because of the stupid interactions it puts into the gamestate. It just never had a good deck before.

Can we bring Infernity archfiend to 2, you practically obliterated the ED they were running.

Again, pretty much touching generic/engine.

That said, buffing Infernity seems like a bad idea in general, considering, well... Infernity.'

And Igknight!Infernity is a thing, so that combined with the fact that I'm not touching actual decks for the most part...

Im pretty sure Igknight!AnyCardInExistence is a thing so i wouldnt go on about them too too much tbh.

But yeah, infernity being buffed in general wouldnt work for the long-term i guess, every time any generic dark or fiend support comes out they become broken again sooo...

Yeah, I play Igknight!Valkyrion the Magna Warrior.

So you've hit mostly FTK cards and searchers, that is cool I guess, but what do you mean by "not touching shit like Raigeki"? In what way do you mean Raigeki is shit, it is a bad card or bad for the game?

I just meant "shit" as "stuff".

I'm not completely sure of my stance on Raigeki and other such cards (Dark Hole, namely, due to Raigeki relation).

On one hand, I know in my heart they're dumb and shouldn't exist.

On the other hand, I don't know what's appropriate to do with them, as Raigeki really isn't the most powerful card, just decently powerful.

From the perspective of an Infernity player, the Deck is only alive because of Lavalval Chain being at 2 or more. Even Limiting it would murder the Deck. If this banlist were to happen, the best thing would be to errata Archfiend to only search monsters, Hard OPT it, and put it at multiple. This would make it so the Deck can function, but requires some effort to go around. Mirage would be the only problem, but without Lavalval Chain, it becomes very hard to be super consistent since it requires exactly two (Inferno would probably be run in this case)

Just hard OPT it and ban chain, then it's balanced imo, since even if you search launcher, the effect wont loop again.

Why not bring back/up Compulse/Book?

Considering that Book's also getting stronger with the gamestate, beyond the Nekroz matchup, I don't think it's wise to bring it up at this time.

Compulse is a weird card, because I think it's too good in higher numbers nowadays, but it's mediocre at 1.
