Garnet didn't bother following. Suddenly Dark Richard and Dark Jeremy appeared. "Hey guys, what's the matter?"

"Are they really coming back?" asked Dark Richard in a slightly hushed voice. Garnet nodded and at once the two duel spirits fled, catching her by surprise. "Hey! Wait!" She took off after them and soon overlapped the two. "What's the issue?"

"If they know you're using us ... we're stuffed," said Dark Jeremy. "They don't trust us, not after what happened during their last year here." Garnet raised her eyebrows and knew they would refuse to say anything. She left it and began to try and persuade them to keep calm.

"Guys, I need to know what's going on," said Garnet quickly. "What happened in their last year? What did you do? Tell me." She looked at them but they couldn't return the look. "Guys, the faster James returns to normal, the better. Please, we need to know." She repeated in a much softer voice, "Tell me what happened." Her unofficial duel spirits sighed.

"OK, you want it, you've got it," said Dark Richard. "It all began several months into their final year here..."

~Flashback~

The shortest of the three young duellists looked victorious as he finished rock climbing up the side of the wall. Typically, the tallest had reverted to using speed to run up the side. The last of the trio had resorted to using his very special semi-magical spanner to shoot himself upwards via a piece of rope. They made no noise as they faced the entrance of the cave.

"This is it," spoke the tallest. His companions merely nodded. "Should we do it?" The silence that followed only spoke one word; yes.

"You first Jeremy," insisted the shortest. Jeremy did so; he stepped in, followed by the shortest, and then the middle heighted one. They walked deeper and deeper in, the only source of light coming from their duel disks. They didn't mind; what mattered was what lay ahead.

They kept on walking deeper and deeper in, until they arrived at the table. At last ... standing on the plinth, were the three Dark cards ... the ones they needed for the ultimate power ...

"I'm not going first," said the shortest almost immediately. He felt slightly unnerved by the cards, and he could tell his friends also were. Jeremy turned to the other boy.

"Go on James, you first," he said.

"No way, not unless either you or Richard go first," he insisted. "I refuse to be stupid and plunge into the unknown."

"You see James, technically you have to go first. Richard doesn't have anything supernatural, and I don't think super speed will help if I go first. You have that spanner, you can do anything with it, so logically it should be you first," argued Jeremy.

"He's got a point," Richard hastily agreed.

"No, I will not -" They stopped as they heard footsteps approaching. They looked at each other in alarm; no one had been following them, why were there footsteps? A shadow appeared, drawing nearer and nearer to the trapped group...

A laser was fired towards AJ from Catasor, but AJ put up a barrier and blocked it. Feild Marshall swung a claw at him, but he narrowly ducked it. However Cosmic Closer fired a blast which hit him and sent him threw a nearby building. "Do you think we'll be taken so easily?" said the synchro to him. AJ weraly got up.

"Ngh! This isn't as easy as i thought. I can't do this alone." Suddenly a voice called out to him.

"But you're not alone. You have us right?"

AJ looked over is shoulder and saw Ruby next to him. "Ruby?"

"Yeah, and you're not alone. You have all of us!" the other Crystal Beast's appeared at AJ's side.

"I don't deserve your help." he said solemnly. "With what i've done....."

"We couldn't call ourselves your friends if we didn't help you!" said Pegasus.

"We've always got your back!" said Tiger.

"We're a team!" spoke Tortise.

"We face anything together!" replied Eagle.

"I crush anything the threatens you!" roared Mammoth.

"We'll never abandon you!" purred Cat.

"We're your friends!" said Ruby. "And you can count on us!" AJ looked at them all for a minute before a smile came to his face.

"You guys......thank you."

For a moment no one appeared. Suddenly an all-black figure jumped out of nowhere and, with an activated duel disk, whacked Richard hard on the back of the head. He stumbled forwards, and spun round when he regained balance. The attacker was gone.

Or so it seemed. Suddenly Jeremy groaned as the duel disk hit him squarely on the back of his neck. He collapsed to his knees, grasping his neck in pain, wincing. James looked around wildly, and briefly glimpsed the black figure stealing the four cards before something hard smashed into his nose. He recoiled backwards, one hand over his bleeding nostrils. Richard tried to leap onto the stranger but he was easily shoved aside.

A cry tore from James' lips as he, despite his injury, ran after the figure. Richard joined him and together they chased after the fleeing person, desperate to grab the cards back. He raised the spanner and a string shot. It scattered the person's grip, and the three cards almost touched the ceiling.

In an instant they jumped upwards at the same time, bashing into each other. Richard felt his fustration rise as his card narrowly escaped his grasp. The person was doing no better either; James threw his spanner again and caught a card. Thanks to the blurriness of the scene, no one spotted him pocket it...
