I Hate Snatch Steal

Recommended Posts

"Summon"
"Effect Target [slang shorthand of target's name here]"

SHOULD BE:

"I summon [monster name here]"
"I activate [monster name here's] effect targeting [target's name here]"

Also, how hard is it to say a card's full name (at least when you first play it)? e.g. "spirit reaper" not "reaper"?

edit: I'd agree that saying the full name of something like "Number 107: Galaxy-Eyes Tachyon Dragon" is or at least can be over the top, but for card with shorter names this still bothers me.

Also on a related note, not explaining what your doing as you do it (playing almost "silently") is really annoying unless you know the other person's deck really well and even then its annoying.

Nevermind please lock (basically this thread has become "Bash the 'horrid' idea of speaking in full sentences while dueling" and recent posters aren't even being mature about it anymore, so its best to kill this thread now)

To actually answer the questions you asked:

1 - "Why can't people speak in full sentences when they Duel?": People /can/ speak in full sentences when they duel, unless special circumstances prevents them from doing so (like language barriers, etc.). The issue is why /don't/ they do it. Those answers have been given in this thread already.

2 - "How hard is it to say a card's full name?" Not very, if you have the name at hand, of course unless special circumstances prevent it. Again, it is more so a question of why it doesn't happen, which is also likely to have already been answered.

As for not explaining what you're doing, people generally assume you know what they're doing - if they're too fast for you, ask them. If you don't like their response, then don't Duel with them.

I usually begin my duels telling my opponent that I can keep up with whatever they're doing so they can go ahead and play their decks as fast as they want, since I know pretty much every card played out there. Though, some people require the extra heads up, which I usually try to provide.

Just politely ask, and unless if they're dicks, they'll slow down. If they are a dick, it can't be helped, quit if in unrated or go play unrated if you don't want dicks. Internet is like that, sadly.

I feel it's an important question to ask: "What medium are you using to Duel?"

If it applies to DN and similar, my hunch is because you're not speaking. You're typing. If you take too long to type out something, your opponent might get all hissy about taking too long. Also, you wouldn't need to announce the monster's name you're Summoning, as they can clearly see it.

If you mean face-to-face Duels, that can also have something to do with location and the people around you. Also, because saying the full name is usually not needed, and might just be annoying to both say and hear. For example, referring to all the Elemental HEROs as "Elemental HERO X" would be incredibly tedious and not really give the opponent any information they didn't already know.

Similarly, I don't always say "Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon", I usually just say "Galaxy-Eyes". If it's Neo Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon, I shorthand it to "Neo Galaxy". If it's Number 107: Galaxy-Eyes Tachyon Dragon, I say that I Summoned "Number 107", and from then on, refer to it as "Tachyon Dragon". If I had to state the card's full name every time I first put it into play, games would take much longer, and unless everyone around me is a Yu-Gi-Oh player, I'd feel extremely self-conscious.

Playing silently, I usually don't like doing or facing. But this rarely happens in face-to-face Duels, at least with the people I play against. In other mediums, the card is displayed, and it's not as big an issue as the card being physically across a table in face-to-face Duels.

You all make good points, and this is in person by the way. I never use DN.

I'd agree that some names are too long to say repeatedly, but I find it annoying that some short card names are made even shorter. Also the lack of grammer arguably bothers me more then the card names.

off topic:

someone deleted the copy of this thread that I made on Pojo, but other complaining threads are left untouched, WHY?

I typically find it enjoyable when duels are short, simple, and to the point. Convoluting your sentences with stupid summon chants, talking about the stupid effects of the monster which you can read at any time on the freaking cardboard, and clogging the duel time will get annoying. You're not trying to replicate the anime, so I think it's a good trait to have to use shorthand during matches, so that it speeds everything up.

Are you playing with friends, or at a locals or something when you play in-person?

Not being a visitor of Pojo or familiar with their rules, I don't know why they didn't like this type of topic. Maybe your issue is actually pretty rare among Yu-Gi-Oh players, in that they usually DO talk with their opponents, so your thread seemed random. Me, I almost always communicate in some fashion, and never had issues with a player just going nuts with their cards.

Playing Yugioh in public or at school is often embarrassing, given that it's about as 'cool' as keeping a diary of topical poems. Mumbling nerdy terminology like "summon" or "activate the effect of..." is a way of not looking like a basement-dwelling virgin.

^this^

Like what others have mentioned already, some opponents (both RL/online) get impatient if you go through the whole "I activate (effect) of (card)..." and there are time constraints (doing this during breaks).

Provided that you're clear with what you intend to do, shouldn't be a problem if you use stuff such as "Activate (card name here), target card 2..." or shorthand some names for brevity (except for the ones that already got short names).

People can use full sentences if they want to, provided they have enough time to fit all of the dialog in (and whether or not the opponent wants to hear it all); unless you're playing someone who is relatively new to game, etc.

I dueled someone who would do that "I SUMMON MY LEVEL 4 BLAHBLAH" and responded "Bottomless.." and then they seemed shattered that I didn't scream "HOLD IT! I ACTIVATE MY TRAP CARD, THE LEGENDARY BOTTOMLESS TRAP HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLE"
