Fusion X. Denver
Surely you've all seen people doing this on your Facebook/whatever at some point this week. Apparently it's worked in raising a lot more money. For those who don't know, people are posting videos of themselves dumping buckets of ice cold water (with ice in it) on themselves after having one of their friends nominate them in their own video, all in order to spread awareness of the ALS disease. And you, in turn, nominate 3+ of your friends to take up the challenge within 24 hours, or they have to donate $100 to one of the ALS foundations. I feel like doing the video and not donating feels shallow and missing the point, but at least it's doing its job in spreading awareness (at least for me, I didn't know much about ALS until this trend and I looked into it). What do you guys think of this?
Dwarven King
I find it hard to take this seriously as I see more videos of the "Fire Challenge" than the "Ice Bucket Challenge" on Facebook. And if you haven't seen it, it's people lighting themselves on fire. ;-;
.Rai
I commend using viral advertising to promote worthy campaigns like this. There will obviously always be people who miss the point and use opportunities like this as a vanity attempt rather than anything else, but I imagine that overall it's a great way to raise money. Obviously providing that the challenge in question isn't as dangerous as shit. I assume an ice bucket over the head is just about fine.
Tentacruel
Better than the fucking fire challenge, that's for sure.
Enrise
Obviously providing that the challenge in question isn't as dangerous as s***. I assume an ice bucket over the head is just about fine. You'd be surprised how many people can fvck this up. And you, in turn, nominate 3+ of your friends to take up the challenge within 24 hours, or they have to donate $100 to one of the ALS foundations. If I'm ever nominated, I'll simply say no to the challenge, and to donating money. But I'll just say something about ALS instead.
~British Soul~
If I'm ever nominated (I'll probs won't and I'm fine with that), I'll do it, but I will probs say no to donating and instead raise awareness.

Cin
It falls foul of the same problem the No-Make Up Selfie did, it assisted in raising money and awareness of its existence, but failed to really give people a true understanding. Suits did briefly cover ALS when Jessica Pearson's ex-husband Quentin was revealed to be a sufferer whilst searching for a cure. (It eventually claimed his life). Saying that I want to watch Simon of the Yogscast's Video.

Most Youtubers I've seen have been doing this which is good, less so from celebrities, mostly because they're via Instagram. And much less so from anybody on Facebook. LordCowCowCowCowCowCowCowCow
It's a good idea, I've noticed plenty of people who didn't really know about ALS learn and donate because of this. I like when I see people who do it, but still also donate, that's how it should be. Even if only a little.
J-Max
Part of me thinks its a huge publicity stunt but if money is going to Charity then I am all for it. Didn't a famous person have like 8 Ice Buckets and then donated a large sum of money? (something like $10,000)

If you fail to do it then you have to donate 10 times the amount.
Simping For Hina
It raises awareness, but this truly goes above and beyond to illustrate what ALS and this challenge are about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h07OT8p8Oik
(GigaDrillBreaker)
I am literally still sorta wet after having JUST done the ice bucket challenge with my little brother. Also donated $10, because that is all I currently have.

To invest into other peoples' lives, and into their pain, isn't something most people would do willingly. That's pretty much one of the simplest reasons why so many diseases and conditions are brought to the spotlight in humour: bake sales, concerts, marathons, or indeed ice bucket challenges. This raises money, and brings to the table the idea that the collective is greater than the individual. That said, I'd recommend to everyone to fully understand an issue. Empathy's a good thing. I'd say the ALS challenge has become a smashing success. http://www.ibtimes.com/how-much-money-has-als-ice-bucket-challenge-made-1665848 Over $41 million raised this year as opposed to last year's $19.4 million. Dwarven King
I saw a video of a band doing the challenge. It basically turned into four of the five goofing off and having fun while the fifth looks into the camera and goes, "I'm going to write the check so I don't have to join them." And so everyone knows, it was hair men in bikinis doing what girls would do while washing a car. ;-;
Elijah~
I just finished doing the ice bucket challenge yesterday. A fee of my friends kept nominating me so I did. I'm still contemplating on if I should still send $100 to the ALS Foundation though.

Shradow
I'm glad something like this is being used for such a worthy cause. It's also hilarious. My favorite is Achievement Hunter's. Poor Kerry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cfc-Qz06xW4 #cringeworthy CaptainSparklez' two-parter was also really great.
LordCowCowCowCowCowCowCowCow
I really, really feel I need to rant so I'm going to. Sorry if it's annoying, but want to get this said. We live in a world where people complain about videos spreading word about a terrible disease. Every time I see an ALS challenge, even ones who talk about ALS and donate, there are people commenting how "This is so annoying, I hope this fad dies soon." I'm so sick of this, not only is it a short video you don't HAVE to watch, it's for a good cause. Sure they could not do the challenge and donate silently, but this helps spread the word. Even the videos of people doing the challenge without mentioning ALS or donating (Which I'd rather they donate and talk about it but anyway) raises awareness at least. Basically, I hope this "fad" keeps going, and it doesn't get ruined by self-entitled assholes who think a few minutes of their (totally optional) time is more important than this research. Shradow
I hear you. I also see people comment all the time, "Why not just donate, and not do the dumb video?" It's like they don't know what raising awareness is, and more than likely it's not like they donated anything.
