ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Surely you've all seen people doing this on your Facebook/whatever at some point this week.

Apparently it's worked in raising a lot more money.

For those who don't know, people are posting videos of themselves dumping buckets of ice cold water (with ice in it) on themselves after having one of their friends nominate them in their own video, all in order to spread awareness of the ALS disease. And you, in turn, nominate 3+ of your friends to take up the challenge within 24 hours, or they have to donate $100 to one of the ALS foundations.

I feel like doing the video and not donating feels shallow and missing the point, but at least it's doing its job in spreading awareness (at least for me, I didn't know much about ALS until this trend and I looked into it).

What do you guys think of this?

I commend using viral advertising to promote worthy campaigns like this. There will obviously always be people who miss the point and use opportunities like this as a vanity attempt rather than anything else, but I imagine that overall it's a great way to raise money.

Obviously providing that the challenge in question isn't as dangerous as shit. I assume an ice bucket over the head is just about fine.

You'd be surprised how many people can fvck this up.

If I'm ever nominated, I'll simply say no to the challenge, and to donating money.

But I'll just say something about ALS instead.

It falls foul of the same problem the No-Make Up Selfie did, it assisted in raising money and awareness of its existence, but failed to really give people a true understanding.  Suits did briefly cover ALS when Jessica Pearson's ex-husband Quentin was revealed to be a sufferer whilst searching for a cure. (It eventually claimed his life).

Saying that I want to watch Simon of the Yogscast's Video.

He does a good recap of ALS at the beginning and provides clear donation links bookending the video. Most Youtubers I've seen have been doing this which is good, less so from celebrities, mostly because they're via Instagram. And much less so from anybody on Facebook.

It raises awareness, but this truly goes above and beyond to illustrate what ALS and this challenge are about.

A great video, cheers for sharing, Dae.

I can appreciate that being an activist from anything other than a distance isn't for everyone. To invest into other peoples' lives, and into their pain, isn't something most people would do willingly. That's pretty much one of the simplest reasons why so many diseases and conditions are brought to the spotlight in humour: bake sales, concerts, marathons, or indeed ice bucket challenges. This raises money, and brings to the table the idea that the collective is greater than the individual.

That said, I'd recommend to everyone to fully understand an issue. Empathy's a good thing.

Part of me thinks its a huge publicity stunt but if money is going to Charity then I am all for it. Didn't a famous person have like 8 Ice Buckets and then donated a large sum of money? (something like $10,000)

Charlie Sheen dumped a bucket of $10,000 on his head and donated that.

I'd say the ALS challenge has become a smashing success.

Over $41 million raised this year as opposed to last year's $19.4 million.

I saw a video of a band doing the challenge. It basically turned into four of the five goofing off and having fun while the fifth looks into the camera and goes, "I'm going to write the check so I don't have to join them."

And so everyone knows, it was hair men in bikinis doing what girls would do while washing a car. ;-;

I'm glad something like this is being used for such a worthy cause.

It's also hilarious. My favorite is Achievement Hunter's. Poor Kerry.

CaptainSparklez' two-parter was also really great.

I really, really feel I need to rant so I'm going to. Sorry if it's annoying, but want to get this said.

We live in a world where people complain about videos spreading word about a terrible disease. Every time I see an ALS challenge, even ones who talk about ALS and donate, there are people commenting how "This is so annoying, I hope this fad dies soon." I'm so sick of this, not only is it a short video you don't HAVE to watch, it's for a good cause. Sure they could not do the challenge and donate silently, but this helps spread the word. Even the videos of people doing the challenge without mentioning ALS or donating (Which I'd rather they donate and talk about it but anyway) raises awareness at least.
Basically, I hope this "fad" keeps going, and it doesn't get ruined by self-entitled assholes who think a few minutes of their (totally optional) time is more important than this research.
