JessicaMuddy
I've loved Yu-Gi-Oh for years, but I've never actually bought Yu-Gi-Oh cards (How despicable of me). Until today. As it is my birthday, I've been getting lots of money, and will continue to get money, so I bought this:

Please tell me what you guys think and if it was a good choice to buy that. Trebuchet MS
I personally find it more efficient to plan out a Deck and hunt down the singles, not spending more than what's necessary.
goddamnit names are a pain
I personally advise you don't buy cards =P Well, if you have to, I always liked getting tins because they used to be really worth all the guaranteed cards, but as of late... Singles are the best approach. Stray away from singles that cost more than, I don't know…$20? I think this was an ok purchase, sort of depends on what you pull. Flash Flyer - Sakura
To be honest, if you really wanted Blaster, you could've bought the singles; though depending on what you managed to pull, may/may not be worth the $20 you spent on tin (or whatever price it is; given that it's a bit old now). Checking a local dealer though, CT10 Blaster is about $1.25 - 2; so might've been better to do that [though price will differ depending on where you buy stuff from]. I don't remember if this one had the Rank-Up Magic or the Fire Fist card in there; I vaguely remember they all had one or the other. If you want to buy all the packs though, then getting the tin is nice; but again, it depends.
JessicaMuddy
Thing is, my dad and one of my friends are the only people I know who know how to play YGO, and I'm pretty sure my friend isn't interested in it anymore. So I won't really be playing it competitively too much. So It's more for the collectors, but still to play with against my dad.
Catman25
i've been telling this to people for years, opening those packs is half the fun, smell that ripe yugioh smell, like new library books. granted it's more of a gamble since you always end up with jack squat, but you pay for the entertainment value that singles can't provide. Sleepy
If you wanna play the game, regardless of if it is casual or competitive, no tin will ever really allow you to get a fully assembled deck out of it. It all depends on what you wanna do with it specifically. If you wanted the thrill of opening packs, if you wanted the tin itself which I personally like the artwork a lot and use mine as a storage for cards, and/or if you just wanted a specific card(s) in there that come for sure. Though I'd recommend you don't buy random packs or tins too often. If you do, let it be as a sort of guilty pleasure kind of thing. Yugioh's ways of making cards and formats compared to other TCG games means that usually you'll see a lot more pack filler in average or cards that are centered specifically around archetypes of the moment. Deck-building still lets you experiment here and there to a degree in the overall game cardpool, but the game is nowhere near the level at which you could just buy a single booster pack and see how you can implement the different stuff you pulled into an innovative strategy. Truth be told, you are more than likely to only find 1 or 2 cards at most that you'll really like unless you are building an archetype from that booster. People usually already know what will top at tournaments for sure before a pack is even released, so not the best buy. I'd say you tell us what kind of decks your dad (and your friend if he ends up deciding to un-dust his deck once in a while to play with you) runs, preferably a full list. That way we can have an idea of at what level the deck is. If you want to use it to just play casually with friends, I understand that it is unlikely that you'll go look at the list of seven thousand and plus cards out there, after all. It is better if your opponent's and your deck more or less match in power. In any TCG, decks can get really outrageously unbalanced in power in regards to interaction, so just to make sure you are not building something like Mokey Mokey Smackdown or a Yugi deck while your dad plays the original topping Dragon Ruler build. I wanna stretch that the buy wasn't per say "bad". It is just not what you need to start playing right off the bat, even with just the casual local stage in mind.
