Just Crouton
Source ODESSA, TX -- A fourth grade boy in Odessa, Texas has been suspended from school for making a terroristic threat. He told another boy that he had a magic ring and could make him disappear. The boy's father, Jason Steward, tells the New York Daily News that he took his son to see "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" last weekend. He says his son brought a ring to class at Kermit Elementary School and acted out a scene from the movie, telling another boy his magic ring could make the boy disappear. The principal was called and immediately suspended the nine-year-old, the Odessa American reports, saying threats to another child's safety would not be tolerated - whether they are magical or not. The principal now says she can't comment on the matter because quote, "All student stuff is confidential." Steward says the principal sent the boy for making a terroristic threat with a magic ring. Steward told her his son lacked the magical powers necessary to threaten his friend's existence, but even if he had those powers, he's sure his son would bring his friend right back. "Kids act out movies that they see. When I watched Superman as a kid, I went outside and tried to fly," Steward told the Daily News. The family moved to the school district just six months ago, but it's the third time the nine-year-old has been suspended, the Odessa American reports. The child was suspended the first time for referring to an African American child as black. His second suspension came after he brough his favorite book to school, called "The Big Book of Knowledge." The popular children's encyclopedia had a section on pregnancy with a pregnant woman in an illustration. _________________ *Reads last paragraph* Their school district must really suck. (GigaDrillBreaker)
Odessa? Like, Heroes Odessa? That is kinda cool. Anyway the actual content is much less cool than the connection my mind made. Stuff like this is tiring, and really just clutters newslines. Simping For Hina
This is ridiculous. Teach the kid what he is doing wrong, not suspend him. 4th grade is still impressionable.
Blake
I don't even see what he did WRONG.He acted out a scene from a movie, he used a term accepted everywhere in the world except America, and he brought in a book that happens to have a scientific image of a naked pregnant woman (I have the book, and while I was more cautious due to my nature, I know the picture is fine). They're just terrible at their jobs. Brinolovania
The mere fact that they're suspending 4th graders for something less than friggin' assault is dumb. The actual reasons are even dumber. Texas and Florida, fighting for the title of shittiest state.

Flash Flyer - Sakura
Out of fairness, the kid shouldn't have been suspended for whatever he kicked him out for. At the most, a reprimand on his 2nd one + explaining what he did wrong is the most severe thing that should've occurred. 1st one is technically accurate; provided he didn't call the African American kid the n-word or instigate a fight because of it, then he should've been fine. 2nd one punishes him for bringing a book of science to school. While granted, the concept of pregnancy isn't exactly a topic that 4th graders and younger should be talking about, it's not worth a suspension. If he did something sexual-related like raping a classmate, then yeah I could probably see it, but that's not the case here. 3rd one (this); apparently the school is unable to differentiate between playing around and actual threats. Let's face it; has science proven that humans have magic inside of their bodies lately? I don't think so. Either said administrators had a sad life without exposure to said movies + acting out scenes or the teacher was, how should I put this, too damn sensitive + can't tell the difference between a playful remark and an actual threat. I've had a teacher like that in 5th grade, so... --- Overall, this kid shouldn't have been suspended for things this trivial. If he actually brought an assault rifle / gun or something, then yeah a suspension would be warranted. But that wasn't the case here. Thankfully Hawaiʻi doesn't have this kind of stupidity in our school administrators (aside from that one example, but that was a decade ago + probably not there anymore). ~ P O L A R I S ~
I think it was the fact he was threatening the kid that they were reacting to, not the "one ring" in question.
Fusion X. Denver
Utterly retarded.3 Seriously. Between this and that other Texas school story about inspecting children's pants for feces, I'm starting to worry about the shit they're pulling over there. no pun intended

People in America these days are only good at suspending and bitch slapping kids for all the dumb and trivial reasons. We don't treat kids that way in Britain, but if I saw one them do it, whether it was in the papers or in person, I'd be throwing them in the trash chute and made sure they land on a wheelie bin. Period.
epicmemesbro
In 1st grade me and my best freind got "benched" (you had to sit on a bench during half of recess) just because we were acting out a scene from Harry Potter >_>

Kids at my school played their own Harry Potter game during recess called Elizabeth Weasley (Ron's daughter and the various shenanigans she got into), which was all the rage until freeze tag picked up again. LordCowCowCowCowCowCowCowCow
I think it was the fact he was threatening the kid that they were reacting to, not the "one ring" in question. Yes but the "threat" was a ridiculous "threat" so that's the thing..."disappear" means "turn invisible" in this case after all. Hell we used to play "cops and robbers" and stuff like that when I was a kid. This is just ignorant and bullshit. And I know bullshit.
The Amazing Avian
So he suspended a kid for acting out a scene from The Hobbit and he didn't know The One Ring only causes invisibility, not actual disappearance... Flash Flyer - Sakura
This is ridiculous! Kids mimic people from the movies! I use to do it when I was a kid! I'm pretty sure most of us have acted out stuff from the movies/TV shows at least once during our childhood. We never got scolded for that sort of thing, unless it escalated to fighting; but that was a rare occasion. Provided that it doesn't endanger the well-being of another person, then I really don't see why this even warranted a suspension; let alone any disciplinary action. If the kid had tried to act out some mecha movie and actually brought a gun or something, then yeah that would warrant action; but not in this case. Granted, I haven't watched The Hobbit, but really; can one ring give the power for a small kid to make someone turn invisible? It would seem that logic was not present in the minds of these administrators at this point. Did the parents of the other boy in question say that their son was threatened in this situation (or did the kid say anything)? From what's provided, that's not the case. Sethera
I really hope they weren't like MY parent. When I told her about this, she was fully on the side of the school, saying the kid "was threatening to make another kid disappear so of COURSE he should be suspended." I tried to explain the whole "ring makes people invisible" thing but apparently that made no difference to her. I don't really understand some people sometimes. I try, but with things like this...shouldn't it be obvious that he was just playing around? When I was a little kid, I pretended to have a magic wizard staff that could shoot fireballs. My friend pretended to have a magic sword of light that could vanquish the evil dragon. So if we were caught playing our RPG-style make-believe nowadays would I be suspended for threatening arson and he suspended for waving a potential weapon (pointy stick) around? For both of us, it was obvious that we weren't trying to harm anybody or anything, and it's difficult to believe it's much different for the kid who got suspended. Limited Edition KING
Only in 'Merica. If the child had a gun or a knife then it'll be a reasonable suspension, but the only thing the child used was his own imagination.

Βyakuya
I'm not surprised cause this kind of BS happens all the time and the generalized school system likes to pave way to punish children with some injustice. But labeling "terrorist threat" against a toy ring...that's just f*****g hilarious how it's worded. Kids will be kids who will expand their open imagination and interest but as long as school admins devote themselves to preserving the integrity, and innocence of school children, they're gonna be mocked to oblivion for every trivial action possible and makign themselves actual stern school staff stereotypes.
