Damn, six months already? That was quick.

Compared to where you lived pre-Hong Kong, biggest similarities? Biggest differences?

Long-ish answer ahead.

So Hong Kong was accurately described by another expat I met as “New York City on crack.” It is a 24 hour city, which was made abundantly clear one night when I was coming back from doing laundry at 2 AM and still ran into people shopping. Frankly, that wore me down. It’s a city that’s at the same time incredibly social and incredibly isolating. I wasn’t in many social circles outside my workplace, and I couldn’t interact with my coworkers that much anyways due to not speaking Cantonese, so after 6 each day I was pretty much on my own. Which sucked. Staved off boredom a lot by exploring. There are a ton of tourist attractions there that don’t get many foot traffic, so every weekend or so I’d go explore. (Protip: the beaches in Hong Kong are actually really nice, particularly off the main island on Lamma Island.) If you ever end up over there, take a ferry to find places you can’t reach via MTR. They’re a lot more quiet and calmer than the downtown areas.

What are the game stores like?

Visited three card stores (League Castle in Mong Kok and Wan Chai, and Basic Land in Mong Kok). All of them were actually in converted apartments in these big-ass complexes: apparently zoning laws are pretty ambiguous over there? People were really nice, though: the stores are big expat centers, and I managed to play a few EDH games there with borrowed decks. There’s an FB group for Magic-playing expats if you ever find yourself living in HK for an extended period.

What are the people like?

The people are nice, but I think I’d be better received if I could speak Cantonese. There was too many times that I felt like I was getting talked at behind my back, which wasn’t entirely fun.

What did you have the most fun doing

Going to the beach! Work always made me so exhausted, so it was nice to run away for the weekend and do a whole lotta nothing. Only problem was the sea urchin that I stepped on once, and the sunburns I got. Why is being white such a pain near the tropics? ):

Which part of HK did you lived in?

Lived in Causeway Bay and worked in Tsim Sha Tsui. Commute was 15 minutes across the strait. Such convenient, wow.

did you go see this guy

The big Buddha at Ngong Ping? Ayup. Saw him twice, in fact: once by myself and once when my gf came to visit from Beijing.

Did you get to eat a dog

Of course not. What do you take me for, a monster?

did you wipe out a herd of fuckin ugly reds?

lel

What does Hong Kong look like?

Lots of high rise apartment blocks. Everywhere. This picture is not inaccurate.

so did you ever go to the water park

Never got around to Ocean Park, sadly. Scheduled it for the last week but it rained all that time.

Tits or asses?

Asses.

What was the best thing you ate in Hong Kong?

See anything you wanted to eat but couldn't?

Yes, I'm a food-maniac. xD

Egg tarts. Holy crap were those things good, but they’re so bad for you too. I could only eat two before feeling gross.

Is this why you haven't been home in half a year? I've left the light on for you every night...

Also what's the best food you've had there?

You're dead to me.

insolent sloot

You're just ignoring me now and I find that rude.

Why would I ignore you? I've expressed my love in so many different ways already.

Yes. But I'm back, so celebrate!

Also the aforementioned egg tarts, but I grew fond of fantuan as well. Logs of sticky rice with filling. Which is a shame, because I only discovered their real beauty after having left HK. ):
