Sakura's AMA #17 (Yeah, I actually counted)

Recommended Posts

why so much japanese

Basically anime/manga stuff; would like to learn enough to more/less understand what they're saying without resorting to translations or the dub (for anime); that, and maybe understand some of the tourists here.

As for signature stuff, should be simplistic enough. Current ones are "Altomare's Signer Duelists" (top left) and Latias's name in katakana (bottom).

I need to change my user title though; should translate to "Psychic dragon storm hero of Konoha" in English.

woah opinion on me

For the most part, you're active in Custom Cards hence why I gave the green light for you to join the AGM. Hopefully you make an impact in there.

Otherwise, you're fine.

1. Yeah, I see a lot of them in downtown Honolulu. That, and a few of them at university.

I remember two tourists asking me how to go to the North Shore via the bus system a couple months back; they spoke English though.

2. It was unexpected, but yes. I do hope that if they decide to use local names for the NPCs/stuff, remember that there are some general rules for Hawaiian language. I sort of doubt they will, but hey.

(I probably should make a basic guide, but as I don't actually speak the language outside of a few words that are intertwined into everyday conversation, just barebones stuff like what letters aren't here, and some words have different meanings if you add on / forget certain diacriticals and stuff)

Suppose living in Hawai'i also helps me identify certain design sources used in the new stuff to an extent. That, and locate certain places in the commercials.

3. In a way, yes and no.

We have beautiful beaches and the hula dance shows; yes, people actually live in modern style housing (unlike some people who think we still live in grass huts; do people even say this anymore). That, and a good amount of people who go surfing. Oh right, and it's tropical weather all year; I don't get to experience snow, but least it's not a desert. (Well, the part of O'ahu where Icy and I live can be considered as such; for the record, he lives on the far west end of the island.)

However, it also comes with some other issues that Lilo & Stitch don't go into.

Although Hawai'i is called "The Aloha State", we have people here who don't even show it. We have a couple of crazy guys on the road who have no courtesy (i.e. think they're on the mainland and drive 70+ on our 55-60 freeways, cut lanes without signaling and so forth). Like my next door neighbor said recently, people are getting bad. Think you saw the thread about us getting new gun measures in General; there is violence here and there, but not the type where people get killed every day (and certainly no police shootings).

That, and the homeless; downtown has plenty of them lately (can't say how much exist on the outer islands). Last time I checked, we have one of the highest amounts in the country. To be fair, a lot of guys from the mainland come over here just to live on our streets because they don't freeze their tails off). Some residents don't like them coming over as they are an eyesore and impede the way for local homeless; like the IHS told everyone "if you're coming here, make sure you actually have a plan instead of mooching off our resources." The problem's getting addressed though, but not as much as everyone would like.

But really, you can probably blame it on cost of housing: Lack of land to build affordable housing (unlike in the states, our space is limited), previous governor decided to sign contracts for multi-million condos instead and purchases from foreigners (China/Japan). Not to mention that one of our islands (Kaho'olawe) is uninhabitable because the military nuked it to bits in the 50s/60s.

------

So yeah, Hawai'i is in a way similar to what Lilo & Stitch implied about it, but in a way, it's also different (or the "dark side" of things).

What are tourists like exactly? I always wondered how they appeared to someone living there.

Just going to speak from what I see on O'ahu, because that's the island I live on.

For the most part, they're basically on the trolley or tour bus taking pictures of the scenery or probably at Ala Moana. Most of them are Japanese/Asian tourists, which is the majority of who we see.

We do have other nationalities come around; I know there were a couple of Australians lately (I can tell because of the accent), but they were fine. One group asked me which bus they need to take to a certain point.

There are some who come down from the mainland. I would say a few of them are fine for the most part; maybe bar for some of them who talk about how their lives are better up in the states. Technically speaking, one of my aunts was born/raised here, but now lives on the East Coast; as a result, she kind of talks like that now when she visits.

Not really sure about other nationalities, but they're generally fine.

Things that locals might say to tourists:

1. Don't desecrate sacred sites, including 'Iolani Palace, homes of where royalty lived, heiau on the islands (because those were used for rituals to ancient deities). In terms of the latter, don't stand on them.

2. Don't take anything from the islands (sand, sea shells, rocks from the volcano, etc); this is linked to bad luck. I need to check on the myths if this includes inter-island things; think people will be fine, but yeah don't. (Pictures should be fine though)

3. Don't litter (although this should apply to anywhere you go, not just here). Saying this because it eventually goes into ocean.

4. Don't bring species that harm our wildlife; Hawai'i is very strict about what comes in here because endemic species.

5. Familiarize yourself with local customs; remember that certain things that one may do on the mainland do not exist here. If you want to surf, make sure that you are permitted to do so.

6. Don't try to speak Hawaiian pidgin unless you've lived here long enough. You will hear a lot of locals using it (including me to an extent) and it's sort of an offshoot of standard English, but to a local, it's considering mocking our culture if one tries to do that and they're not from here.

Basically stuff like "hey brah, like fo' surf up North Shore?*" and "where you stay**", among other things. I am not exactly proficient at it either, since I tend to use more standard English and I grew up with people who don't use it all the time, but more/less an example.

* Hey, you wanna go surf up on the North Shore?

** Where are you; where do you live?

When you come here, please remember that Hawai'i is NOT the mainland, and be respectful of Hawaiian/local culture.

What was the first card you made/remember making?

Probably some random HERO card in what's now Casual.

A lot of my older posts are embarrassing to look at now.

I was joking but that was actually very in-depth

I'll just give you my opinion.

Basically, you're fine for the most part, but occasionally, you do take things a bit too seriously in this part of YCM. Probably doesn't help too much that you aren't really seen outside of General. Nothing wrong with it, but that's what a lot of members know you for.

Opinions on me?

Let's see...

You have a lot of learning to do regarding certain phrases and stuff on YCM and the internet as a whole, including the fact that stuff in Miscellaneous is just that; random stuff that isn't going to happen,

I will say that you have gotten better at cardmaking a bit since you first came here, but you have a ways to go in regards to that.

Other than that, you're still too new for me to give a more in-depth opinion.

gimme ur opinion of me bby

Most of the time I see you is in Showcase/GFX, but in that regard, you're one of the few vets I even remember from the section, alongside Smear, Catman and Dae (not saying that Night and Rai aren't here, but former is becoming more absent lately, and I've not see Rai post stuff in a while [then again, I don't either]). All the other vets I remember are long gone now.

But otherwise, you seem to be fine.

opinion of me?

also where do you get your motivation to go through the day and still actually participate in ycm?

1. Aside from that small flare-up regarding Winter and Nyx's disagreements in the former age game thread some time ago (which they've settled), you're generally fine for the most part. Although I can't necessarily say a lot as I don't see you around in other non-game forums. TCG, yes.

(Probably doesn't help that I don't play any active CCGs that other members play, so no reason to view Other TCG)

2. To be honest, sometimes I'd rather not be here, given the amount of drama on the forums (and subsequently, Discord) at times, but I try to ignore that and focus on my job. I suppose that keeping tabs on new stuff in TCG and my section(s) keeps my interest in here going. I did leave for almost two years though near the end of 2011 because I lost interest in this place and felt I didn't have anything else to do.

I don't really know; suppose my drive for trying to improve CC among other things are what keep me motivated to come around here. That, and GFX things.

That's probably me trying to design generic stuff that isn't linked to the AGM or stuff I have to rip out of Games threads. Ever realize that I rarely post singles/generics outside of my 1k increment posts?

Probably a few things I can say here.

1. Find things that you like (i.e. other anime/manga, card games), then figure out what would be a good way to express their powers in card form. Some guys here like Pokemon, so make stuff based on your favorite 'mons. (For the record, I've already done this a couple times; threads should be in Advanced Multiples for the most part)

2. Look at the recent ideas Konami made (or didn't), then base stuff off of that. If Konami didn't design something for your favorite Type/Attribute/summon mechanic/favorite series character, etc, then make something. Just avoid making Rank 4 decks.

3. Borrow stuff from the AGM thread; yeah, I end up having to use this for cardmaking nowadays (because I run out of ideas to make that aren't copy/pastes of particular Decks that already exist)
