Culex Battle from Super Mario RPG

Let's get some deviation up in here, literally. Upon first hearing this song, if you've ever played SMRPG before, you'll realize the music is not anything like any of the other themes. Hello, Happy Kingdom or Beware the Forest Mushrooms sounds nothing like this, it lacks any dramatic impulse, it lacks any sense of urgency or difficulty. Tracks like those have a happy or mysterious overtone, as do all of the other tracks in the game. This track, however, was most obviously "borrowed" from a Final Fantasy game that came out, oh I don't know, at about the same time. No matter, this track is still amazing. I find it interesting that they'd change the style of music just for one track, but seeing how fast-paced the Culex battle really is, I find that this track suits the boss very well. The first 15 seconds of the song carry all of the emotion with them. I find the bridge loop (0:34 - 1:04) is probably the worst part of the song considering it just doesn't carry the emotion you get from the rest of the track. It is still a well-composed piece, and although it takes on a Final Fantasy theme with the composition and instruments, it still sounds amazing. Culex, you must have banged one of the sound programmers to get this track for yourself.

Since I'm here...

Have you ever played Reach? I doubt it. But still, it's an amazing game. It has a ton of epic soundtrack, many of which would be a fitting contribution to this station. But I feel that the Reach soundtrack is missing something. Something that was ever present in Halo 3 and most of its predecessors. I like to call it Hold Music (Made up on the spot xD). This is the type of song that will take a grip on you, keeping you from leaving a game. If I finished a game in Reach, and I go to the menu, I would have no problem switching to a different game or turing off the console. But with 3, it was a different story. I would back out to the menu with all intentions of turning it off or switching. But I would find myself unable to do this. I would just sit there, staring at the menu, absorbed by the music playing in the background. Eventually, I would turn around and play some more. This type of soundtrack is as important as anything else you could put in a game. It's the type of music that keeps people coming back for more. It's a beautiful piece, with several heart wrenching piano parts. In fact, I listened to it the other day, and it was enough to make me pop back in Halo 3. If a song is able to do that...it is as good as you could get with a Hold song.

And, for the record, I did not write this because Dark wrote something long. I just wanted to add it, and I thought I would give a few thoughts. Unexpected wall of text was unexpected.

The guy scares the crap out of me, but his theme was cool, glad you added it.

Also I'm surprised no one has mentioned this:

Completely ignore Minecraft's beautiful soundtrack, do you? I am very disappoint. D:

Minecraft - Danny
I don't even have any words to describe this peace, it's a beautiful gem sitting on a pile of lard, basically. The minecraft soundtrack as a whole is fantastic, but for some odd reason I get a feeling of nostalgia listening to this track in particular. It's just so calming to listen to and is easy on the ears, unlike most every VGM on the market today. It's also very comforting to listen to when the creepers explode your building. ;.;

Metroid Prime - Magmoor Caverns
I wish I could stop being a girl and get to this place, this theme is just plane awesome. I may not like metroid all that much, but this theme is one of the best I've ever heard. Though, I don't get much of a "VERY HOT PLACE" vibe from it, but more of a "GENERIC CAVE PLACE", but that's just me.

Custom Super Mario World Music - The Lullaby
This is just, wow. I barely have any words, but I'll try. No, I can't do it, anything I say will be injustice, you need, NEED, to listen to this and decide for yourself.

Lego Island - Information Center Top
My god. The nostalgia, it's to much. The electric guitar in this track is just amazing, and for such an early PC game like this, it's perfectly executed, I can't say anything negative about this track to save my life. OK, I might have let my nostalgia take over, but it's still a great track nonetheless.

Yeah, two DVs. How do you like them apples? I don't.

Dragon Palace from Okami

Take a second and listen to the first, I don't know, twenty seconds of the track. If you don't immeditately think underwater, I don't know how little experience you have with video game music. Tracks like this just scream underwater, and they just scream a tenseless enviornment that progresses the story. This isn't a battle or boss theme, and it doesn't sound like a field theme, so you know it just has to be a storyline progression theme. Despite the Dragon Palace being a bubbly (zing, ++pun) reskin of earlier places in the game, the music here is unique and beautiful. I could listen to the track over and over again and never get tired. The entire track just gives off such a nice, relaxing air of tranquility, and this is one of the only tracks where I don't notice where the repeat happens. It just sounds new and refreshing every time you hear it, and this track has got to be one of the best in Okami, a game renowned (by myself and Clair, at the very least) for its music. The instrument choice is boring at best, but that doesn't detract from how the song sounds, in other words amazing.

Twilight Over Thanalan from Final Fantasy XIV

To be honest, I would have never known about this song without good old Twig, and I fell in love the second I heard it. It seems kind of typical that I'd review a sad song, but this is one of the few gems in the entire Final Fantasy XIV OST. I am not really sure where this theme is used (based on the video title, it seems like either a field theme or a cutscene), but this music is suitable for literally any sad or cutscene situation in any game. One thing that really seperates this track from other sad tunes is definitely the cymbals. First heard at 0:26, it really shows that this song can be as dramatic as it is sad. You don't really think of tense and dramatic not going together, but this song exemplifies how something can be extremely dramatic without necessarily being tense. This song was just beautifully composed, and Nobuo should die before he even thinks about leaving the Final Fantasy franchise. If you have never been interested in this main-stream, overrated Final Fantasy music, I suggest you listen to this track to divert you from all the lies surrounding Final Fantasy music. It really is as good as people say, and this is proof enough.

Something is missing.

Majora's Mask: Song of Healing

I never quite listened to this song as much as I should have. For me, it was always Ikana Castle, Great Bay Temple, even Majora's Incarnation, but never this masterpiece. It plays in so many areas, from the start when you learn it at the beginning, all the way to Pamela and her father being reunited. However, that last one is the only one where you get to hear it on repeat, so maybe that's why I overlooked it. Even now, after listening to Okami's soundtrack, Gusty Garden Galaxy, Space Junk Galaxy, none of them made me feel like this did. The entire song as an air of mystery around it, much like the Happy Mask Salesman did. The song may not be heard often, but when it is, the moment is always powerful.

I shouldn't have done that.

Final Fantasy XIII- Saber's Edge

Probably my favorite track from the whole FFXIII soundtrack. It's absolutely epic. Beautiful piano, amazing build up, and very energetic.

Another epic piece. It's so engaging; it's like taking you to a new world.

That's all for now.

I wouldn't necessarily compare it to tracks like GGG or SJG, but I understand how much this song and this game mean to you.

Song of Healing has always been one of my favorite Zelda tracks, and not only does it have an air of mystery surrounding it, but it truly does give you that feeling of being healed. It just has such a melancholic overtone that it sounds different from most other video game pieces. This song is one of the best-composed songs in the Legend of Zelda franchise, and I'm glad someone finally had the brains to request it. <3

[s]Those totally weren't just the first two tracks that popped into my head.[/s]

I could fill up the entire thread with Majora's Mask music I love, for various reasons, but I figured it would be better not to.

After all, most of my favorite Majora's Mask tracks made it into the last two threads.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Beware the Forest Mushrooms

I wasn't sure if the latter should go in RR, since it's an actual (though unused) song in the game.

[DV]Tales of Symphonia - Deepest Woods (Ozette)

Can you listen to it? Can you listen to the emotion played? This music is probably one of the most saddest musics in the game (and there were many poignant musics in this game). When you first listen to this theme, it starts off at a melancholic note provided with a flute. The instruments in this composition are ominously played as though the location is associated with many bad omens. If you also take into account that this is not only Presea's (the member of your group who had the most traumatizing past) hometown, a place in where discrimination against Half-Elves is intense and that it was destroyed for it's beliefs, it makes sense at how a theme could emanate so much sadness. This is one theme that really makes emotion run through my head every time I listen to it.

There will be an update tomorrow.

This weekend has been so packed. ><

I've got a question for you all. What game do you think has the best soundtrack overall?
For me, I'd have to say Okami or Shenmue, most definitely.
