Alfred, I found that Athletic Theme one a few months ago, and it was such an interesting piece. Glad you requested it, and I hope Clair finds a spot for it.

Feel free to use any of my Different Voices for their respective stations, because I know you sometimes want to use a song for a station that isn't DV, but the song was requested in a DV. I just write my comments in case you want them, but I couldn't care less if I get a DV spot or not. :]

That being said, let's exercise my music-analyizing abilities!

A Great Spirit Lies in Wait from Okami

This is one of the scariest songs I've ever heard in my life. When I was first going through the Tsuta Ruins in the game, this song came up and I almost shat in my pants. This has one of the scariest overtones to it in the entire game, and it was more than fitting they put it in every room that leads up to a strong boss. This song, with its perfect use of the shamisen and a few string instruments unbeknownst to me, turns an amazing soundtrack into something that can covery a wide variety of emotions. Imagine playing this on a piano, and think about how different the emotion would be. Songs rarely sound scary on the piano, so the instrument choice was absolutely amazing for this song. Up until 0:27, the song carries a large sense of mysteriousness, and I find this song to be so damn interesting to listen to. Every time I listen to it I find a new facet, or something I missed earlier. The cluster chords sound dramatic and beautiful, and the song is wholly well-composed, much like the rest of the soundtrack. This is one of the only songs that I've heard of that actually scared me, and hopefully you can listen to it so it scares you, too.

Lavender Town (Extrasensory Version) from Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow and FireRed/LeafGreen

This song, as said in the description, is the original RBY theme played backwards on top of the FRLG theme. Also in the description, it is stated that the two songs are obviously out of tempo, making it a lot more creepy. I'm sure all of you have read the countless creepypastas about the Lavender Town theme, and upon listening to it, you scoffed at how not scary it was. Then FRLG came along and the theme was nullified even more by changing the chiptune sound of it. This remix, however, really amplifies the emotion of the first generation's Lavender Town. It does sound a bit scary, especially since almost anything backwards will sound at least somewhat demonic. At 0:23, 0:31, and especially at 1:03, you really get a sense of how this song differs from the childish original version. Maybe it's just be, but at certain points in the song I can hear a dog moaning amongst the tune, which doesn't scare me persay, but really makes me wonder about why I'm hearing that. At around 1:40, when the song starts to fade out, it does sound a little menacing, but all in all it's a beautiful remix of a well-composed song, and I love both of them to death. No pun inten-

Starship Mario from Super Mario Galaxy 2

This song really tapped into my inner emotion when I sat down that summer day to start playing this amazing game. It's yet another song with intelligent instrument choices, and the fact that the song is so interesting makes you wonder how many times you can listen to it before realizing that it's just repeating over and over. The string instruments sound great in conjunction with the percussion drums, and although those two types of instruments make up the bulk of the song (although they snuck some harp in there), they work so well together that it sounds great regardless of the small instrument array. The first seven seconds of the song just give you that simple feeling of adventure, and the first portion of the song which is played in what I believe is a flute, sounds perfectly amazing. The song has a very nice transition from calm and adventurous, to exciting and a bit fast-paced. You can only pin down the general term of "happy" on this song, which makes sense: this song is supposed to make the player happy, which is why it's the most-used song in the entire game. You listen to it a minimum of 242 times, and definitely more. This song is well-composed, and lives up to the legacy of Galaxy games.

Butter Building from Kirby's Epic Yarn

Butter Building is one of the staples of Kirby games, and I was so extremely excited when I heard the last level in Epic Yarn was a throwback level that included remakes of Green Greens, Gourmet Race, and yes, even Butter Building got some love. This is one of the most catchy songs of the entire franchise, and when I first heard it played in Nightmare in Dream Land, I was hooked. If you don't already know, Dark lurv da pianuh, so hearing a piano arrangement of one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite franchises from my favorite video game company really made me burst with happiness on the inside. This song, emotionally, is pretty stale, however. It has a happy overtone, but that's really it. The original took a really adventurous theme, especially considering the situation in the game that it was in. This was kind of laid-back, and while it wasn't terribly-composed, it feels like it is lacking an integral part of Kirby music. I guess I felt that way with the entirely piano (or almost entirely) soundtrack of Epic Yarn, but I still stand by my opinion that this is in the top three for the the entire Epic Yarn soundtrack. Butter Building has always been a great song, and this remake is no exception.

Next to orchestral stuff, video game songs with lyrics are probably my favorite.

For the last time, any original music within a video game is video game music. D<
WE'VE BEEN OVER THIS.

Big update today, imo. Hopefully, I'll be able to do this more often. xD

original music within a video game is video game music

Opinion, not a fact. Video game music isn't clearly defined at all, and I refuse to believe that me singing into a microphone and putting that as a credits song consitutes as actual video game music. That is lyrical music, not video game music. Things like One-Winged Angel that have lyrics for dramatic effect are fine, and things like the Final Bowser Theme from Galaxy 2 that has dramatic chorus vocals are fine, but things like Still Alive and Simple and Clean aren't what I consider video game music, despite being MADE for a video game. It just doesn't work for me, and I doubt I'll ever change my mind about this.

There honestly is no official definition of video game music, similar to how there is no official definition of art. Art consists of a broad aspects of objects, and putting a definition means you are either including too much or restricting too much. The same goes for video game music. You could say that original music in a video game is video game music, but what happens when you come across a track that was sung by a person, a singular person that is also an artist, and an artist that thus produces songs? Maybe they won't care if the music is labeled as video game music, but you can't be sure where to draw the line.

But this argument is dry and stale, and we've argued it more than enough in our deceased vgm club, so... yeah.

This piece is a defining piece for me, as whenever I think of any MKDD OST, this one is the first to come to mind. Maybe it's because the course is so darn fun.

Believe it or not, I had a very difficult time of finding HeartGold and SoulSilver music that I found to be excellent (Yes Dark, it's true). It either falls between the boundaries of either trying too hard or trying too little. However, I did find some remixes to be amazing:

[WCA]Pokemon HG/SS - Ho-oH Battle (extended)

and for some Black and White music:

[GEN]Pokemon B/W - Dive It's a shame that you can only dive in one area. The diving mechanic in this game is amazing though.
