Now there's an unappreciated soundtrack for you. Everyone forgets the Pokemon TCG soundtrack, despite the fact that the game itself was a reasonable success. I blame the fact that it wasn't very accessible and that most of the people who did play the game only get a nostalgia kick out of the soundtrack. However, thanks to the advent of such gifts as the internet, these unknown classics are preserved for us to idolize once again. Another of the reasons it was overlooked was the nature of the soundtrack as a whole. Every single piece was a bluesy, jazzy one, or at least had elements of rag and blues (a lot of familiar chord sequences, two-five-ones). The most widely praised and recognized piece in the discography of the game is Club Leader Duel, which ironically is probably the only piece in the entire game that has no elements whatsoever of blues and jazz. It is mainly popular for its driving, progressive rock feel. Many pieces in the fantastic library are more subtle than out-and-out ragtime pieces like Grass/Lightning Club, for example, another popular theme, Grandmaster Duel, captures elements of blues in the riff throughout the first phase of the piece, or uses chromatic, blue note style vamps at the beginning. Club Leader Duel and Grandmaster Duel are fantastic, though somewhat stereotypical boss themes - they are driving, majestic pieces that create tension (very obviously in Club Leader, but more subtly in Grandmaster for instance), but they are not the reason I find the soundtrack as a whole very appealing. It appeals to me as a Jazz musician due to the very complex, different themes that resonate throughout the soundtrack. For further bluesy listening, have a gander at these:

Professor Mason's Lab & World Map Theme from Pokemon Trading Card Game

I like the different moods you get from the piece. The upbeat, groovy vamps at the beginning turn into a reflective, somewhat melancholy background as the lovely melody comes in. It is very much a "nostalgia bait" piece. What I like about it is that unlike much video game music, it is constructed like a genuine Jazz form - it has an introductory vamp, a melody, a bridge and then a turnaround back to the melody before finally looping. It loops very well despite these traits, which is always a bonus.

Challenge Hall from Pokemon Trading Card Game

This is a sort of blues waltz, with nice little nods to baroque and nationalism (I'm such a music nerd D:). The blues elements come with the bass, but trilling of the top melody reminds me of a piccolo. It is a piece that I would describe as "cute".

Trainer Battle from Pokemon Trading Card Game

This is a very upbeat piece that uses blues form in the form of that really catchy bass. Nice harmonic melody, catchy bass, good turnarounds and interesting chord choices, this ticks all the boxes. It's hummable and very bluesy, yet also a very simple piece, which a part in it's inherent catchiness. Sublime.

Now it's time for some FireRed/LeafGreen music with their Johto themes being 10x better than the same songs HG/SS butchered imo.

So far, I only found Ecruteak City, S.S. Aqua and Shinto Ruins to be the only good tracks along with what I presented up there good. Rest of them, they either tried too hard or just lost the emotion that Pokemon is known for instilling.

So yea Dark, I can say that I do not bull with this decision. FR/LG is the only game I could consider where the remix has beaten the original in this area.

I have to disagree. I loathe the soundfont used in Generation 3 - the trumpet noise always annoyed me and they overused it massively. Some of the composition was great (Verdanturf Town, for instance), but I found most of it either trite or in the case of the remixes, unsatisfying. HGSS did some fantastic remixes, like National Park, Cianwood City and Cherrygrove City, along with satisfying covers of Lance/Red Battle. They also pulled their weight with original compositions like the fantastic Ho-Oh Battle (Okami, eat your heart out).

I do know Ho-oh's battle was great, hence I listed it as one of the good songs in the game. I wanted to like the music in HG/SS, but I just really couldn't like it that much because I feel that it just lacks some aggressive emotion it needs (the music just doesn't peak in my ears as much as I expected to. It is more of a disappointment excluding some of the tracks remixed).

The Gym Leader battles from HG/SS were aggressive and truly showed that they don't push around daisies.
The Ho-oh battle was likewise just aggressive, perfectly showing Ho-oh's divinity and grace in the battle.

I think you are misinterpretting the whole point of the soundtrack. It was by far the calmest game I've ever played. I don't mean it was easy, and Kanto did make me struggle a bit, but it was the most calm atmosphere we've ever had in a Pokemon game. Just because you aren't used to calmer music (which shows why you loved the Gym Leader themes out of everything, which I found personally boring and unoriginal) doesn't mean the soundtrack lost its emotion. If anything, Azalea Town tripled the emotion of its FRLG counterpart, which tripled the emotion of the original GSC music. You cannot honestly say that Route 47/48 was not a good track, and I refuse to believe that Olivine City did not meet your standards. I don't know how much you liked Gen II music, but as a vgm enthusiast, I can honestly say that HGSS far surpassed anything that GSC could have pulled out of its ass.

The music in HGSS is easily my second-favorite soundtrack, only losing to Black and White. Composers learn over time. Gen I was too harsh, and likewise with Gen II. As Mikhail said, Gen III was very boring in terms of its instruments, and Gen IV in terms of DPPt was a new era of music, but because it started a new era, it was boring. HGSS is the first Pokemon game that revolutionized the music by making it calm. I cannot see how you think that the soundtrack "lost the emotion", when the soundtrack exemplified the emotion displayed in previous generations. This isn't even a matter of attacking your opinion, I just refuse to see how you found HGSS such a boring soundtrack, yet praise FRLG where half of the songs were terrible, half of the rest were try-hard remixes of Gen I songs, and the remaining quarter were genuinely original songs.

Yes, the Champion Theme in HGSS far surpassed any Champion Theme I've heard thus far. It actually instilled fear and emotion in me, where the other chiptune Gen I and Gen II tracks were boring, and the Gen III and FRLG tracks were too harsh and loud.

In response to your trumpet comment, I always found that the trumpet noises were scratchy in-game, but on the official OST on YouTube, it sounds crisp and clear. I suggest you listen to Marine Science Museem both in-game and on YouTube to see the difference. Some of the Route tracks in Gen III were absolutely amazing, and reminded me of the Route tracks in Gen I. They were just downright adventurous.

Great Pokemon discussion up there, guys. Personally, I do think HG/SS had ahhh-mazing music. Route 47/48 has got to be some of the best Pokemon music ever composed.

Thanks for the TCG selections, Alfred. Glad you like that OST. ^^

Update eventually, because right now I'm supposed to be studying for AP exams.

I have to agree with Zero here.

Not about how the music didn't instill any emotion, there was plenty of that, I just don't think it was great...

I liked it at first, but eh... I got tired of it.

Anyway, since I'm posting, I'll go ahead and leave this here.

I don't mind if there is calm Pokemon music, but calm isn't what Gold and Silver were entirely meant to be. The soundtrack was supposed to say "Get up boy. Put on your clothes, dirty yourself up because you are going on an adventure all on your own" which means I expected the music to have more of an....."adventure" feel. Instead, I get a soundtrack that sounds like rich people taking a stroll through town. Yes it is true, I do like more aggressive music, but I felt that when music plays in the game, it is supposed to fit the situation which is where I felt HG/SS lacked in. I gave praise to FR/LG's soundtrack because it's remixes captured the Spirit of Adventure Pokemon games were known to have.

Olivine City was actually the least greatest track I have heard in the game, mainly due to the fact that it felt overly-complicated for a relatively simple town and port city.

Well, how often did you play the game? I don't see music as something you get tired of unless you listen to it constantly, like a terrible pop song. When Ceelo Green's "Forget You" came out, I loved it, but they overplayed it so much that now it's... eh, it's dying. Getting tired of video game music shouldn't happen often because video games are designed to keep progression at a relatively fast pace. Take Okami, for example. As soon as you enter Hana Valley, the first track is the cursed zone. The second is as soon as the cursed zone goes away. But to progress the storyline, you must go to Kusa Village. The designers make it so that one track isn't playing for a long, long time, and Pokemon does one of the best jobs at making sure the tracks are mixed up. How you got tired of the HGSS music beats me.

Gold and Silver were adventure games? From the second you enter New Bark Town, how the hell do you not get a calm feel? I can understand that Pallet Town was a ton more adventurous simply because of the nature of Generation I, but Gold and Silver were relatively calm games. They were slow-paced, and they weren't all that "exciting" in terms of any aspect of the game. Woo, Team Rocket comes back. It wasn't meant to be too aggressive, anyways. HeartGold/SoulSilver exemplified this lack of aggresiveness, and instead of having a stupid soundtrack stuck in limbo between aggressive and calm, they took the atmosphere and made the soundtrack calmer. FRLG admittedly had some good remixes, but some of the songs were simply terrible. For most of the soundtrack, I'd rather listen to the chiptunes of Gen I, which is what I consider a failed remake.

Two things about your last comment. One, I have no idea why you correlate the complexity in a song to the complexity in a city. Two, what the hell do you define as complex? Great examples: Castelia City looks to be complex from you calling Olivine not complex, yet has a very simply yet suiting song. Mauville also is very simple by your standards, yet has a very complex track. I don't understand your logic in saying that Olviine City had too complex of a track when you havne't properly defined complexity in a city, andy you haven't explained why the hell I should correlate city and music complexity anyways. Also, if anything, Olvine City's track was more than suiting. You said it yourself, it is a simple port city. The song not only fits a city by the water, but it fits the style of the city perfectly.

Tell me you aren't serious????

Gold and Silver was an actual bigger adventure than Red and Blue! You had a rival who was a thief, you investigate buildings with a criminal organization ready to gang-bang you, teetering towers and explore even more remote caves than the last game. I really don't get how that is even calm when G/S's primary focus was to introduce to you a grand adventure, not a calming one.

Also, I am saying that the music that plays in Olivine City is complicated in comparison to the towns it played in. There are too many instruments played for a town with the 1st Gym and a port town. It needs to be a bit more.......robust to actually fit them both. This is just my opinion anyways Dark. You can consider it to be flawed, but I have listened to enough of the music to make my own judgment on the soundtrack.

I adore the soundtracks of Gen I and II, and I love them more than my own family, but I think that is more down to nostalgia and rose-tinted glasses. Though I thought that the Champion themes from Gen I and II were both fantastic, seriously. But yes, I do enjoy some of the Gen III soundtrack, just not as much as the rest. Gen IV is actually quite nostalgic for me as it holds many memories, and the standard of composition was outstanding. There were no themes in Gen IV that were bad. One or two boring ones, but some of them were majestic. Cyrus Battle, Galactic Admin Battle, Elite Four Battle, Route 209, Eterna Forest, Eterna City, Spear Pillar, Canalave City - all are fantastic, fantastic tracks. And those are just the ones I remember the names of. I can hum every tune in that game.

I cannot explain the moment of intense fear this music induced in me as a child when I played it. Red & Blue were surprisingly dark games, if you think about, and this music doesn't f*ck around. It mercilessly bombards you with tension and fear.
