The Current Metagame

Recommended Posts

As this format draws to a close, let us take a moment to look back and analyze why the metagame is so screwed up.
The banlist seems to have helped, but most of the top-tier decks still revolve around 1-2 specific cards.
Why have these poorly-designed decks become so popular and are so effective, how can the decks be countered, and how is this new format shaping up?

[insert Deck theme of your choice here] is the best Deck because [insert phrase of your choice here].
^seems legit.

I don't care if people dislike not knowing exactly what to put in the Extra Deck as a consequence, I still want to see many already existing Decks be able to have a chance on relatively equal footing.
If something is badly designed enough that it needs to have a specific side Decked counter, or else a Deck will die against it by default, that is a problem on itself.

Chaos Dragons still seem kinda good, and hopefully some of the new Decks coming out will add something to the format as well.

You forgot an obligatory:
"Chaos Dragons are the best deck because who gives a f*** about playing something other then Future Fusion"

But why did all of these terribad decks like Inzektors and Wind-Ups come into existence?
If everyone hates them, why are they so popular to use?

Because they win.

No, seriously, that's the answer: They win. And people like to win.

The reason they win (Inzektors at least) is because they constantly put pressure on the opponent without devoting too many of their own resources, since Hornet can be re-used from the Grave several times, destroying opposing cards with ease just because you have a specific card in the Grave. This is similar to why Grapha is so good in Dark Worlds. It furthers the Deck goal while maintaining a constant presence and threat level. Grapha loses effectiveness only when there is something with more ATK on the Field opposing it, and the DW player doesnt have any methods at that moment to deal with a 3000+ monster.

And that's something I never understood about human nature.
The only reason anyone would like Inzektors is because of their success. Anyone who has dueled against Inzektors knows they are broken, yet those same people probably have their own Inzektor Deck on DN, because of its success rate. The same goes with Wind-Ups, at least last format.
What would happen if people just used cards they liked, like in the anime/manga, instead of cards they know would net them easy victories?

The decks themselves are not hated as a whole. Only the loop is hated on Wind-ups, and only Hornet + Dragon Fly + Centipede is bs for Inzektors.

There's also that OTK for wind ups.

What would happen is that more people would either enjoy losing with their favorite cards (unlikely) or they would become discouraged because they lose with their favorite cards. Since Konami made some cards objectively better than others, (and assuming your question addresses the current cardpool) there would be a select few players beating the everloving crap out of all of the others, because they like the cards that happen to win.

As for the meta itself, what is there to discuss? I feel like this is one of the worst formats I've been in, and I've been in the game since the beginning. It felt dull. Septemer, IMO, will make for a much more diverse and interesting format with the re-introduction of Synchro builds and Agents into the game.
