Weeaboos

a bad post

You know this video really did kind of open my eyes about my perception of weeaboos.

The one thing I do have a problem with is something she mentioned in her video. Only having a limited knowledge, and not improving your knowledge, or learning more about the culture you wish to emulate.

God knows though that I went through a weeaboo phase, and I used to always think about how I was going to move to Japan and everything would be great, or how much Japan was better than America and how much I love my glorious nippon.

Anyway discuss you weeaboo phases, your opinion on on weeaboos, or your opinion on this vid.

5 years ago I was all "I want to go to Japan! I want to play the Arcades there! I want to breathe Japan!" These days I am a lot more reserved but I will not deny that I love Japanese Culture.... So I decided to learn Japanese as a Pseudo second Language. I can speak pretty good and read it if spelt in non Kanji text.

I love Anime and am a sucker for Moe and the like so I believe I am kind of a Weeaboo. I still respect my own lofe though and keep my "Kawaii Desu!" tendancies under control.

People who say desu desu kawaii and want to live in Japan are infinitely less awful for society than the people who comment about how the awful Otaku's are scary and pathetic and are going to rape children or some s***.

Or in more simple terms, people are never as annoying as the people who complain about them.

^Pretty much sums it up.

Basically, the way I see it is that there are people who like Japanese culture, and then there are those who are "obsessed" with said culture. The latter tending to be very vocal and expressive about what they love, while a sub-division of the former find their actions to be embarrassing and/or vexatious for whatever reason. In an effort to distance themselves from the "weeaboos" they then publicly demean and degrade them so as not to be mistaken with said "weeaboos" even though they're literally one and the same, the only difference being that one is composed of people who just want to make what they love apparent and the other being composed of assholes who like to put people down in an effort to make themselves look better.

Grow the fuck up, let people enjoy what they want and have the decency to allow them to go about doing so the way they want to.

All TFS jokes aside, Japan does have a better economy

are you serious

anyway my opinion on weeaboos is the same as my opinion on people with any other life choice that's not dangerous etc to me - leave them alone, they're welcome to be whatever they want as long as they don't shove it down other people's throat.

Grow the f*** up, let people enjoy what they want and have the decency to allow them to go about doing so the way they want to.

The only objection I have to weeaboos is that you have to be one to know what half the people on YCM are on about. The only anime I watch is Pokemon and I'm not overly interested in Japanese culture or anything. The only time I really think about it is in economics essays where I have to give examples of the effects of deflation on an economy. Not bashing weeaboos, just I'm definitely not one.

TIL what a weeaboo is. What a silly bloody name.

Anyway, I don't get why it's a big deal. Do whatever the f*** you want.

But the video. Holy s*** the video. The video is so unbelievably bad, I can't believe I watched 14 minutes of that. The stock Youtube jump cuts, trademark terrible arguments which the person goes on to contradict 5 minutes later, and the general vibe of the arguments. "Let me defend weeaboos! They're just kids going through a phase and we should disregard some stuff because they'll totally grow out of it." Not even trying.

EDIT:

Ouch, calling half of YCM weeaboos.

Well, aren't half of YCM weeaboos?

Under 2% of Japan's population are immigrants because Japan doesn't like immigrants because of the Sengoku Jidai and I guess Hiroshima. Ergo, why would anyone want to move there?

Idk, job prospect there is far better than in my country.

As far as I know, skilled foreign worker sometimes are valued more by Japanese companies compared to the Japanese people themselves.

But maybe that has changed.

Its better than when your sister comes out of university, more qualified than most teachers AND STILL CAN'T GET A JOB AS A TEACHER.

Personally, I don't mind weeaboos too much. If they like Japanese culture, then we shouldn't be criticizing them (though I can understand if they mess up the language and upsets native speakers OR don't learn more about the culture as well). I didn't watch the video though.

As for a weeaboo phase, I don't think I went through one. If I did, probably not that severe and mostly related to word usage (or saying something like "Watashi wa (name) desu..."). Or that happened a long time ago before I even learned about subbed anime.

Granted, I watch a fair amount of anime (RAW when they're first aired, but then subs when they come out). Despite that, I am making an attempt to learn real Japanese on my own time, so that I can actually speak it properly and understand what the heck they're saying without the aid of subtitles. I know a fair amount of words and phrases (which I can attribute to some anime, textbooks from library and other things), that much is certain, but I still need a good amount of practice at them, including learning how to write the kanji for them or their other readings (since unlike English to some degree, they're pronounced differently when combined with other words/characters). I can read/write kana moderately well, however, so that helps to some degree (I have a chart of said kana characters on my wall).

I also need to adapt said words for different situations, such as not using "ore" to refer to self in presence of parents or people of higher status [If I'm unsure, I either check online or ask some acquaintances of mine who took Japanese in school (they're better at it than I am)]. In time, I'll get more proficient in the language (since one of these days, I'd like to visit Japan).

Culture-wise, I know about their traditions/customs to an extent, thanks to NHK programming/other things, but like with the vocabulary, there's more things to learn before you can grasp the concept of why they do certain things that often differ from the culture I grew up in. I might've messed up in the past, but I'm making an effort to actually learn about their culture better than I do right now.

To sum it up, I honestly do not see anything wrong with weeaboos. As Night mentioned, they're only showing their passion for Japanese culture (even if they get words/traditions incorrectly); can't deny that point. If they want to do it that way, you really can't say much about it other than suggest that they learn a little bit more.

I'm not quite even sure I know what a weaboo is, but considering I'm okay with furries, yeah, whatever.

Like whatever you want to like, just don't expect people to respect you when you take a body pillow with a picture of your waifu to watch a movie.

This raises an issue I feel the need to address.  The amount of people who actually do that shit is astronomically low.  It's almost an outright strawmen used to shit on people who just like weird shit.
