FIFA World Cup 2014 Brazil General Discussion

I remember that time in 2009 when America kicked Spain's ass in the Confederation Cup or something.

And then going up 2-0 on Brazil before giving up 3 goals and losing.

I'm not sure if we played Spain at full strength then, though, since it was closer to the World Cup.

We could definitely beat Portugal, though. They're missing one of their best players and just aren't good as they have been. It's definitely possible.

Got half an eye on the game.

Half hour in, 1-0 Portugal from Cameron's mistake, but I don't know how it's like that because the US are all over them.

Literally this is the most one-sided 0-1 since... well... since QPR nicked promotion in the playoff final off Derby...

I'm... can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm willing this US side on. Their energy and their fans are really endearing.

Also, f***ing Algeria destroying South Korea earlier? The Africans and North Americans aren't just making up the numbers in this tournament and could well get six teams to the second round between them.

At this rate that's more than Europe will get in!

Half time, still somehow 0-1.

Portugal, can you say one man team much? They really are nothing special

I can't believe I'm saying this, maybe it's just wanting that slimeball Ronaldo to fail, or maybe it's just because of the hilarious US Soccer Guy twitter feed, but come on you soccer eagles! I'm rooting for you!

2-2. Portugal equalised in last seconds, literally.

USA undid themselves. Just had to see it out, keep the ball, put in the stand, anything. Just do anything other than what Bradley did and faff around with it under pressure in the middle of the pitch with 20 seconds left. Plus he missed that sitter at 0-1 as well.

America just didn't help themselves and gave away the ball really sloppily a lot, Jones especially (lovely goal though). Really feel for them because the team's spirit and fans have really swept a lot of people up and got them on their side, but that's how harsh this game is.

Portugal were beyond mediocre though. Not even close to the side they're hyped up as. Ronaldo was crap for 94 minutes then made one cross at the last. Thankfully for the USA they would have to absolutely smash Ghana to recover the goal difference, and I can't see that happening. If anything the Americans need to worry more about Ghana smashing Portugal and would happily take a scrappy 1-0 Portugal win on Thursday.

Tied in the last minute

No, they choked in 90+4 and got a 2-2 draw.

The real reason Portugal tied. 5 minutes was waaay to long.

30 seconds per sub, six subs made, that's 3 minutes to start with. Couple of injuries to Beasley and Bisler, I'd say 5 minutes was about right. America should have dealt with it and seen it out properly. Sorry =/

Belgia is love~ Also, why does people here seems to hate Ronaldo? Doesn't mean I'm defending him, just curious.

Envy.

Although he does have a lot of genuinely dislikeable qualities.

Anyway; predictions for how the second round will look now everyone's played twice;

Brazil vs Chile

Holland vs Mexico (sucks for one of my sweeps team =/)

Colombia vs Uruguay

Costa Rica vs Ivory Coast

France vs Nigeria

Argentina vs Switzerland

Germany vs Algeria

Belgium vs USA (yeah, still backing you to make it with Ghana and Portugal knackering each other up. This is where I stop supporting you though as Belgium are my other sweeps team)

Now who'd have looked at the groups and predicted THAT to be the second round?

Personally, I'd put Russia rather than Algeria there (though neither of them will be able to do much against GLORIOUS GERMAN FOOTBALL).

But yeah, lots of surprises here and there this time.

Alright, so, since you guys apparently wanted me to get a write-up about Bosnia up, I figure I might as well do it now. I've been in bed for the last 4 or so days, and I swear to god I got sicker during the Nigeria game, so bare with me. I'm no writer, so excuse bad writing, spelling mistakes and whatever else I do that someone might frown upon. I thought about how I want to go about this a few times and came to no conclusion so I'll write off the top.

Now, for you to realize how big of a deal this is, you need to understand the nation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, because I'll presume most of you couldn't pinpoint it on a map. It's a relatively small country in Southeast Europe (often said to be the heart of Europe, mostly because of the location and border shape), on the Balkan peninsula (this s***'s called a peninsula, right?). Now, looking at the map, you might see a few more countries you may or may not recognize bordering Bosnia. These, along with Bosnia and some others, made up the nation of Yugoslavia (most recently the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia) and to cut this short, I'll get to the point of why I'm bringing up history in a football thread anyway. After the collapse of Yugoslavia, Bosnia and it's capital, Sarajevo, took part in the Bosnian War - including the longest siege of a capital in modern warfare. This was led out by nationalistic factions who wanted to "cleanse" the area they believed to be a part of what they believed was theirs, killing thousands of Bosniaks. If you want to learn more, read up mainly on:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosnian_War

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Srebrenica_massacre

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Sarajevo

(it's not light s***, don't do it very late at night and don't read all of it, lots of unnecessary details and sugarcoating, should get the gist across)

Anyway, the reason this is relevant is that these were events which emotionally tied lots of people to the country. When you look at our capped players, you'll notice that plenty of our players could've played for other countries (also because of the war, lots and lots of families had to emigrate). Edin Dzeko lived in Sarajevo during the nearly 4 year siege, others like Pjanic moved very early (for example, he was eligible to play for Luxembourg). So, in the 5 World Cups held since Bosnia became an independent country, this was the first one we qualified for.

The nation is in a state of turmoil. The government is corrupt, half of the country is unemployed (literally). The one realistic joy most people in the country have are those two or three games of our boys playing their heart out for their country every few months. The whole country was blue and yellow when they qualified. It allowed everyone to transcend what happened (or didn't) in their personal life, and bond with nearly 4 million people over the kick of a ball. You know, the team's captain, Emir Spahic, made a statement regarding life in Bosnia, and he explained something so very essential in life here that it made me personally reflect on my relationship with my homeland. I'm not even sure if it's truly his quote, but it has a point. Loosely translated, but you know what, you should take my word, I was 3rd on the Federal English competition, wink:

"I'm sorry that we don't have a freeway, that we have more than half a million unemployed, that a******s govern us spreading nationalism, making fools of us.

I'm sorry that many of us spent our childhoods in cellars. I'm sorry that people don't know and underestimate us.

I'm sorry, because I know that the streets of all cities in Bosnia would've looked stunning...had it been different.

But I am so immeasurably glad that I wasn't born in Paris, or somewhere in Denmark, or Portugal, countries that have big stadiums and a cold crowd, from which you have to squeeze out the cheers so that they may support their team for some two minutes. I'm glad that, in this cold, hungry, poor nation of ours, if something happens to you in the middle of the street, there are still people who will stop and help you, no matter what. Because when your neighbor calls you over to his barbecue, even though he's been at the bureau for half a year, even though he has no idea how he'll manage next month's rent and has no earnings.

You don't live here just to die - you'd die to live here. This is my Bosnia."

My translation may not do his bonechilling words justice, but I hope that you can see why, when that cheap c*** from New Zealand stripped Dzeko of a goal, he stripped a whole country of unimaginable joy. If I think of any other points to bring up, I'll do so in an edit, but until then, I leave you with my message of: f*** tonsilitis. My head f***ing hurts. f***ing f***.

TL:DR: Nation is kinda shitty atm, football makes people happy and shit

edit 1:

also didn't mention the recent floods

uhm, yeah, water go splash in mostly north and northeastern parts of Bosnia, as well as some of Croatia and some of Serbia

I wanted to link to this reddit thread which was active during Bosnia's first game. I don't know, all the foreign people cheering my country on made me feel nice so I figured I might post it: http://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/2889kv/match_thread_argentina_vs_bosnia_and_herzegovina/

USA destroyed the Germans 4-1 in a friendly not long back! Jozy Altidore score them all, haha!

That German team was not even close to their starters.

And Altidore isn't even guaranteed to play with that injury he got vs Ghana.

I don't think we'll win. But I think the USA can tie, or at least not lose by too much. As long as they don't get blown out and the Ghana-Portugal game doesn't get out of hand, they have a chance.

tl;dr the US should score as many goals as possible in the next game.
