Underage Drinking

I don't do it, but some friends have, as well as many strangers and family members who are under the age of majority in Canada (18).

The fact that it is based on various parameters of a person psychologically that are unpredictable enough to be called capricious means that I have no care about if children drink it. Saying to do it based on moderation or that their bodies may be too small to properly handle it can be said of anybody to an extent, anyway.

For the concept of underage drinking, it's only really enforceable if you do it in public.

You can still drink at home [provided you know when to stop, and if your parents are there to keep an eye on you]. Though, we have a ton of campaigns that say "No giving alcohol to a minor" because of the host law or something along those lines; but how is the government going to enforce it [unless you have a nosy neighbor monitoring everything you do]?

The USA's legal drinking limit is 21 years or older (meaning drinking and even helping your parents carry it, unless you're old enough). Personally, I think it should be 18 [since apparently 18 is considered to be adult, considering you can vote/buy cigarettes by then)

As for me, I don't drink; I promised myself that I'm not going to until I'm 21 and have a job.

I have never found alcohol very appealing, and the idea of a hangover disgusts me. So, no, never participated in underage drinking, but I know a few people that have. As long as you aren't endangering yourself, other than poisoning your body, or anyone else, I don't care if you drink underage. Don't get me wrong, I think it is a bad idea, but who am I to tell you how to live?

I agree that there is a problem with the age limit. If you can enlist in the military at 18, but not drink, that's ludicrous.

My thoughts are pretty straightforward and probably not really anything that hasn't already been said here. I have not and will never drink. I don't think anyone should underage or otherwise. But everyone's free to make their own choices and so far as they don't endanger other people they can have at it.

Its the sad thing that is considered cool, under til you have the side affects and its far too late. I did as a child have a small glass of wine with my sunday dinner, it was just something we did as a family, but the only one in my house who drinks is my sister who doesn't drink alot because of her medical condition.

I have no problem with there being an age limit, but I also have no issue with children having a bit of wine or older teens having a beer with parental supervision.

I don't drink yet, as I'm terrified of law-breaking.  (Although I did sneak a sip of wine that was in the fridge once, thought it tasted awful.)

I'm going to be 21 in a few weeks though, and I'm definitely going to try it.

I'm more meh about the culture surrounding underage drinking in America (that being drinking until you're completely messed up) rather than the actual act. Drinking done in moderation is fine, kids in Europe do that and as far as I know, they've been handling their stuff much better than us.

I'm actually wondering if it's the inherent rebellion of going against the law fueling drinking culture. It'd be interesting to see what would happen if they lowered the age to 18 if it would affect the whole dynamic.

That said, I've never gone full-blown wasted, but getting tipsy at parties is a good time.

I have no plans on drinking, it doesn't appeal to me.

Though once, when I was little, I did take a swig something that was in a glass, thinking it was apple juice. It was not apple juice. I just know that soon after, it was spewed out on the floor.

I had a drink of alcohol when I was like... in third or fourth grade or so.

And let me tell you, that was probably the best way to turn me off of it, cause whatever it was, it was fucking nasty. I haven't thought about really drinking beer since then.

Though I wouldn't mind trying wine sometime, just to do it...

Anyway, as long as it doesn't get out of hand, I don't really have an opinion on it. Underaged people will always find a way to drink if they really want to.

Well I personally think alcohol is nasty so never had a desire to drink it. My parents are alcoholics and several other members of my family have issues with drinking. So I can understand wanting to limit who drinks it. As for other people, drink if you want to just don't force it on me and try to keep safe.

Though I do know it can affect the brain if you drink to much. Yes that happens even if you're an adult but underage people's brains are still developing so I don't know what kind of impact it could have.

NYC has increased the buying age for cigarettes to 21.

More or less this. I actually am 21, but I have zero interest in ever drinking. I know FAR to many people that have/had problem with alchol to ever want to partake in it myself.

As for the age, I'm fine with it being 21. 3 years can make a difference in people's decision making, though I do agree being able to do almost anything at 18 expect this one thing is silly.

Most alcahol tastes like shit. There's a reason that they call beer an "acquired taste". It means you have to get used to how shitty it tastes and ignore it.

I've been trying a few alcaholic beverages. Beer like miller or budweiser was gross, red's apple ale was better, and mike's hard lemonade was good enough for me to down in like 10 minutes.

I really find it funny how most people think teenagers drink because it's "cool." Are you kidding me? Maybe the stupid ones, but let me tell you it's ether for the hell of it or to forget. I've done it for both reasons. Overall I don't think it's an issue if you've got friends to take care of you and if you stay safe.

"I've done it" Your experience doesn't equal most. Not nearly as many as you think drink to forgot. And "for the hell of it" is pretty much at the same level as "it's cool".

Most probably do it just because, and because other people around are doing it so "why they hell not".

The issue is that even with people around, stuff can happen. Especially if they drink too. And you can't stay safe always when drunk. I've struggled to keep drunken family from hurting themselves and others, so I know that it's not so simple as "Have people around and stay safe". I'm not saying all people shouldn't drink. But there is no denying it can be dangerous.

And it doesn't give that much of a positive effect. Sure you may feel great for a while, but you can do that with out drinking and it doesn't last. Forget? Well drinking has been known to make people remember negative things, and even if you do forget it's only temporary.

I'll just out and say it. I hate drinking. If people do it, fine, but I hate it. I think it's very stupid and very pointless. It has messed up a few people I know and it pissed me off when I see people taking it lightly.
