What is your taste in literature and storytelling media?

Aix

Recommended Posts

Describe what you look for in TV Shows, books, comics, etc. Do you look for something lighthearted that can bring up your mood? Something deeply emotional that can connect with you? What sort of things/genres/themes especially appeal to you?

Basically, if you were asking for recommendations, how would you describe what you were looking for?

I...err...

This is one of those things I've never bothered to try describing. When I come across media, if I think it's good, I'll keep it up. If I think it's bad, I'll drop it. I don't really try to seek any one particular thing.

Aside from mecha. I'm usually looking for mecha stuff.

in film i guess art House, Sci-Fi and very Experimental/Surreal stuff is where i go to though i can watch Action, Drama, Comedy or even Romances at sometimes though they dont always appeal to me as much as my go-to things i also have a large enjoyment for Horror but not as much as i used to. same could be said for Anime though much more lenient with it when it comes down to favorites. never got too big on reading though since im in Advanced English i have to read stuff and i usually end up picking dystopian literature, ive read Lord of the Flies, 1984, Brave New World and im currently working on Fahrenheit 451. i dont really read any comics other than the Sonic comics as well as some occasional webcomics so i cant elaborate on my comic preference since im really not a comic book reader. i guess for the most part my preference goes towards deep and thought-provoking stuff but i do like quite a few more fun and straight forward things as well.

In terms of films and TV shows I'm a huge fan of comedy, funny TV shows are often what I use to give me a bit of a lift when I'm feeling down, and otherwise I just like them to kill time. Reading-wise, I like a wide range of stuff but recently I've been reading a lot of P.G. Wodehouse which is hilarious and appeals to my slight preference for more mundane stuff rather than deep fantasy which creates a whole new world for the reader. I also love reading non-fiction stuff, from intentionally entertaining stuff like Bill Bryson to articles about the economy or Yugioh or whatever else.

As in anime i mostly watch magical girl but i can watch anything (it just needs to appeal to me).

As in books, i mainly read fantasy (like 95% fantasy), i also read a few sci-fi (with the Hunger Games and Divergent) and i'm slowly getting into horror. Also, i don't like pure romance books (like, it's okay if it's the secondary focus of the book, but if it's the normal love thing between two teenagers then, no)

As in movies i watch 90% animation movies, and the other 8% is filled with fantasy and 2% others

I generally just read/watch things if the blurb/synopsis appeals to me. I do generally lean to anime rather than live action and then more to Tokusatsu shows like Kamen Rider when I do. For particular genres I like magic and mecha in particular, with the main appeal on how the magic is depicted (not just spell casting but more like magic is a science and mechanical) or how the mechs are designed. I also enjoy things with supernatural themes and such, romance as a sub plot most of the time, and more recently gore.

For live action shows it really depends on how the show is portrayed. Kamen Rider Wizard was not the best KR series but I fully enjoyed it, for the way magic is shown and just the after thought I had of what would happen if Pheonix managed to get back to Earth. Though overall if story is lacking or the characters aren't getting to me I just find it a pain to watch.

Hype is what gets me to a show in the first place. I heard people rave about Breaking Bad, Gravity Falls, GoT, etc, and that was the impetus to checking all of them out. It's rare I just go and look for a show I think I'd like because my backlog is consistently filling with what I've heard other people say was good. The closest I come to choosing things for myself is for new anime for each season, but even now I'm waiting a couple weeks to check people's first impressions.

Beyond that though, I'm pretty flexible. Romance, thrillers, mysteries, action, comedy, as long as it's entertaining and/or good, I'll watch it.

I look for things that I can immerse myself in and forget about the outside world for a bit. Something with just enough creativity to paint a whole different world, and good enough writing that it can carry me through its pages. Thus I usually go for high-quality fantasy, such as Discworld, Lord of the Rings, and the Forgotten Realms.

I give any book a try though if it has a riveting enough summary, if I've heard good things about it, if it's part of a series I'm reading, or if I like the author.

Generally on the grim/thought-ful side more than superficial joy and most comedies. I'll watch pretty much anything with a passing interest, but I only really get into that kind of stuff.

Oh and it has to actually be good. If it's bad enough that I can spot it being bad, I generally don't enjoy reading/watching it. It just gets dull.

I think it's important to have a wide taste in media. That said, I'm an absolute sucker for great aesthetics in a show or film. I've begun to move away from literature, if only because I value the visual and sonic elements of other media too much.

^Literally all of this. Gorgeous sheet right there.

Also, it should be noted that Transistor's visual appeal is further complimented by an OST of

. funking gorgeous.

I am a massive fan of pirate-adventure genre books. Treasure Island and stuff.

I also enjoy comic books; namely the Asterix series, as well as Tintin sometimes, although not so much. I enjoy them because they are quick and easy to read and very humorous.

As for things to watch, I find films to be too long for me to sit for and focus on, so I generally prefer ones around the 30 minutes-1 hour length. I am enjoying the current series of Doctor Who a lot, the suspense between episodes is excellent and they've managed 4 episodes without any that I would consider boring/cheesy 'filler' episodes, which is an achievement.

I have this innate preference toward visual/interactive media for storytelling. I absolutely adore film. Great directors and writers that develop a deep, abstract atmosphere with interesting characters, as well as well-developed plot points. I don't really have a favorite film genre - favorite films, rather. Directors like Kubrick, Scorsese, David Fincher and Wes Anderson are/were very well-rounded, stylized directors that excel at creating a very distinct atmosphere.

hells yeah Kubrick is amazing, in my eyes the only director who comes close to his level of quality is David Lynch.

I think the thing I most look for in the media on consume are good characters. I think the best example I can give is Nisekoi. Normally that isn't the type of thing for em and while I don't think its super amazing or anything there is just something about the characters that I love which causes me to just love the series.
