This is something I've been meaning to ask for a while, but never got around to.

 

What voice do you hear when people post?

 

Here's some personal examples:

 

Ever since I saw Sakura's sig explaining that his real name was Jason, I've heard every word he posts as if it was Jason Bourne's actor saying them.

 

Because his avi was Simon when I joined, I hear Giga as Yuri Lowenthal, Simon's English VA.

 

I cannot stop hearing Nyx as George Takei, for some reason.

 

I don't know how Garland will react to this, but whenever he speaks I hear the Black Knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

 

I hear egotisticalghost as Emma Stone for reasons I cannot comprehend.

 

Et cetera.

I have voices for everyone, but they're not particularly anyone, if you get what I mean. They are voices I just somehow use, not based on anything.

Same for me, but I don't know names to compare the "voices" to. A voice maker would be a perfect tool here, for modeling how are they heard.

To be honest I just hear every post in my voice.

It's only natural, I guess. Almost everyone is doing this, because utter silence is hard to achive.

For most people I don't know its just none I guess. For others I know I do kinda imagine a specific voice. For Winter, I hear some Russian accent, for Rod an Antonio Banderas voice, for you Brits Hugh Laurie, for Rewas Bane.

I heard my voice from a Twitch stream once. funk that was so funking awkward.

I didn't even realize that I did that.

Now that I'm actually thinking about it though there are particular voices my mind automatically assigns for particular people.

 

None of them are actually specific, they're mostly just variations in tone but there's definitely a difference depending on the person. For some people it's more distinguishable and emotive, Aix for example sounds indifferent as funk, Dae is sassy, Hina is strange combination of bold and timid, etc.

 

It's more pronounced depending on how much I regard the person, for some people it's remarkably vivid, but for most people it's just a monotone version of my own voice.

Interesting phenomenon though, I thought it was only limited to characters in novels.

Likewise I read most people's text imagining a neutral-sounding version of my voice I guess. Depending on my impression of them, the tone changes ever so slightly.

It's a little different for me. I hear it in spoken lines in novel text as well but in those cases I imagine a very clear and distinctly different voice from my own. Likewise in chat text I imagine different voices for different people as well, but in forum posts it's pretty much all my bored-sounding voice.

Reading something is like speaking. Words are heard; you can't say something without being heard, unless someone is deaf or you ave a mental problem that can't speak words. Whichever it is, not hearing them is like there are no words? Know what I mean?

Now everyone is going to ask how they sound like.

When I read, I hear it in my own voice, except for character dialogue. To a lesser extent, I hear voices for some YCM members, but some more than others. For instance, Mirei's comes across strongly as a chirpy moe-girl, and Nyx as a flat, sarcastic baritone. Hina sounds like a playful but crisp voice, kinda like Carrie Fisher. CowCow sounds higher-pitched even though I know for a fact he has a fairly deep voice.

Every now and then I like to imagine posts in a text-to-speech program's voice not unlike Spaceman Sam's.
