Painful Escape

Tribute 1 monster; add 1 monster with the same original Type, Attribute, and Level, but with a different original name, from your Deck or Graveyard to your hand.

Anyone have an awesome way to use this card? Only thing I could see its use in is if you had a monster that fulfilled these conditions that could revive what you tributed off last turn (For example, tributing a Boxer and then adding Switchhitter).

That or searching Star Seraph Scepter.

What are your thoughts?

That's not a card you would actually normal summon

I guess, but having Honest in your hand isn't a bad thing most times

I feel like I'm missing what you're tryna say

Edit: Oh, as in card you'd tribute to search the Star Seraphs?

Lets see

N'tss, Ju's, Herald

there's a couple options, but nothing amazing as has been established

Gotta love card design with no room for middle ground.

Best use I'd say is Hieratics, but it's slow for that.

It's pretty hard to "balance" Transmodify type cards

Aka I use Wings, Sage and Scale.

Sage is awful and Scale is sub-par. Wings is... "fine".

It's just so hard to find archetypes that have all the conditions met tbh

You can kinda' sorta' play This in a weird Symphonic Warrior/Speedroid.dek

I mean, Tributing Guitar gives you Top, and vice versa. Tributing Sizerrs gives you Yoyo, and vice versa.

etc.

It's pretty hard to "balance" Transmodify type cards

I dunno, I quite like Transmodify. It has some neat uses and some cool niches; but it's not something I've ever seen qualify as unbalanced.

For this card, it feels REAL close to being something solid and usable, but its nature as a trap really holds its back in terms of speed. I mean, a SUPER roundabout use I can think of in Trains is if I set Call of the Haunted and Painful Escape while I had Switchyard out; use CotH to summon a level 10 machine; Switchyard goes off and summons Ruffian; tribute Ruffian with Painful for a search; Ruffian adds to the hand, and do that all on the opponent's turn. I mean, it's a HELLA strong play, but it's way too situational and fragile for my tastes.

I mean, that is a +2 play, which is pretty nifty, but I got a few of those already that aren't as slow or require as much setup. For the most part, a lot of decks are able to work around their own consistency engine in the S/T department that ends being better than this, and for the decks that don't (any Machine deck that needs generic support, for instance), this ends up not really fulfilling the need that the deck has.

Overall, kind of just a meh card that won't see use because a given archetype already has better options, or this just doesn't fill any niche for a given archetype that doesn't.

well, batteries can search thunder seahorse/AAA/9V with this. the fact that it's a trap slows it down a bit too much though. raidraptors can get pretty much any monster out of this if you happen to have left a monster unXyz'd at the end of your turn, but since strix, raidraptor/swallows' nest, mimicry, and tribute exist, there's no real need to use it i guess. maybe fluffals? they have a lot of different levels, but they're all the same attribute, so they search out a lot of monsters as well, so i'm not sure there either. frogs might be able to go nuts with this though, they're all the same level, with a ton of interactions in grave, but they don't actually search the deck, so this could be a nice keypiece.

Amorphages can use this. Tribute a Phage and get another one and potentially trigger an Infection. However, they don't entirely float, leaving you open, and you lose your maintenance costs for your scales as well as an Amorphage monster in general for the scale floodgate effects.

Other than that, this card really isn't seeing much play nowadays, and it will only be played in rogue decks that have some archetype versatility. The only problem is its speed; you have to have a target and this card at all times which you would have to set the turn prior first, and it's best if you worked with floaters with this card. BA was a primary tech, but since Dracopals dorpped off the planet, the trap variant is starting to become extinct, and BA in general is starting to shift gear into being more offensive with Beatrice and Kaijus. This card now in it is highly obsolete.

I can only predict that there will be an archetype one day that will be hyped and because it can have use with this card, this card will get hyped as well; it is a Secret Rare after all. Only time can tell if this can age properly.

*Looks on ygopro for monsters with "if this card is tributed"*

So there are only 8 total monsters that can specifically trigger off being tributed from this card... good to know.

Then again "if this card is sent to the graveyard/sent from the field to the graveyard" is a lot more plentiful of an effect, huh?

Anyways... as for another use... this could be helpful with the ABC Unions I guess?  It gets you 2/3 of the way there for the ABC-Dragon or allows you to search out Gold/Silver Gadget plus it triggers the Unions' float effects.  I mean, We've all really hit on the issue of this being too slow, but it does have quite a large number of uses, doesn't it?
