Because music has been slowly tilting away from having meaning since the '50s? Because kids are raised on the meaningless music that is mainstream, and thus grow a sense of security with it?

Seriously, I don't mind mainstream. Not the stuff I love, and I really wish that 90% wasn't so shallow, but people like it. I think they're idiots for liking, say, Nelly, but they might call me an idiot for liking Manafest, who most of you have probably never heard of.

I just, personally, prefer deep music, and wish other people did the same, but, eh, can't control the masses.

I am not saying all mainstream is shallow, either.

I actually respect your opinion because you were able to explain it. Can't say the same for the ones who just went "MAINSTREAM SUCKS HERP".

Very good points as well.

Out of genuine curiosity, in your opinion, what mainstream music is NOT shallow, if such a thing exists?

Stuff that actually has some meaning to the lyrics, not about Poker Faces, or Tying her to the bed and setting this house on fire, or We're just a couple animals. Something more like Breaking Benjamin, which is mainstream, isn't shallow.

Yeah, I noticed this as well. Eminem has some good songs but the end is always weird :/

The word mainstream does leave a lot of questions, in almost everything like history, society etc. we try to describe "what defines society" without realizing that there were and are always many different people in every society and that while you can catch what seems popular/accessible in arts, technology etc., it's not automatically what "the masses" will all agree with.

If anything, I'd rather agree with whoever is using HORUS' account right now, that mainstream is the dominant trend in opinion, fashion, arts etc.
I thought that mainstream rather means something like, what is currently accessible to most people, but it seems like many people are using this word to distance themselves from "the stupid immature masses" and trying to build a barrier between "you" and "the others who have no taste".:/

[/my s*** sounds all confusing right now, I know :/]

Also, it makes me cringe when people come and tell me that "in my times/times I wasn't even alive in but pretend to know that well", all music was really so deep and meaningful and nowadays everything is shallow and retarded.
Seriously, I could link you to a dozen of totally ridiculous, meaningless songs from "the good old times.-.-

I love every type of music there is to like, mainstream or not. Hell, even I make my own classical music, and how many people can say that they've done that?

And I also like these songs.

Kanye West is actually talented. People forget that rapping is indeed a talent, and like every other instrument (Rapping is a derivative of vocalization and therefore an instrument) only some are highly talented at it. The trouble is that a lot of the anti-mainstream crusaders have bad motives - they are blind metalheads or hate mainstream music because they like oft-ignored music. I am a Pianist, and a pretty good one. I have an understanding of music theory. Put simply, Stefani Germanotta is a decent pianist, but she writes worse than most GCSE Music students. I have friends that are doing the same Music GCSE class as me who can write symphonies. They can write dazzling concertos and mournful nocturnes, they can create true emotion. I myself play Jazz, so I can improvise a solo on the spot. I can play Ragtime, Blues, Miles Davis, Bill Evans; I can interpret scores in my own way and play with a band. Gaga most certainly had a team of writers to help her, and all this stuff about her "originality"? Haus of Gaga, a team of forty or so designers, designs and chooses all her clothes. She doesn't write her own music. She can sing reasonably well, but all she is a vehicle. Nothing more. That's what these people are. Vehicles for professional writers and designers, the puppets of Svengali figures like Cowell.

Most of your post is correct, except the bold. Well, I don't know about the old albums, but she wrote all songs on Born This Way.

Also, just curious, why do you always state Gaga as your example in these argument? Just wondering.

Lady Gaga is everyone's go-to as an example of mainstream talent, and mainstream lack of talent.
That's a bit ridiculous.

There are people with more and less talent than her.

Why don't they focus on those that are worse/better than her?

Get your head out of your rump.

A. Rap music and Rock music have the same base in the far past
B. In some cases, Rap and Rock are roped together

You'd be surprised at some music combinations, like country rap.
Which, surprisingly, is better than you would think, even to someone like me that usually doesn ot care for either genre, 'cept on occasion.
