A guy called my home claiming he works for windows/Microsoft. He showed infected files I had and had software on his computer to be able to control other people's computer stuff. He downloaded something to my computer a chat thing. He also changed my SysKey and he said something like "send me 149 dollars to get a Windows XP upgrade". I did not send him money luckily. However although I am in the top 10 most intellegent safety experts on planet earth, he even had me tricked. My eMachines windows XP is now unplugged. Please if you get a call like I did hang up and unplug your computer for about 72 hours but at least 2 hours I recommend. Also while very very very rare that a scammer means physical harm, please report all scammers especially those who wish to do physical harm to targets. They said someone else has been waiting for me and put up a profile link. Thinking it was someone I've met in the past, I followed along, and downloaded a fishy program needed to "successfully add" that "person". I realized a moment before running the program that it was a phisher. Got my passwords changed and all. Nothing has been disturbed ever since. That was fortunate. Now you're glad it only happened in Runescape, not in real life. My bro once got those "YOU WON 10 MILLIONS" popups when he was like 8 years old. Then the alarm bells start ringing once they mentioned a Fee to access the funds. Told them kindly to F*** off and then did some research regarding the Scam.... Oh man, how could I forget about those. As a former avid TF2 trader I got about a dozen of those a day whenever I had trades up. Eventually I could tell just by their username or avatar if it was a phisher and immediately blocked them when they sent me an invite. Cin Posted January 20, 2015 Report Share Posted January 20, 2015 Phishing e-mails are really common, if they could correctly guess my bank they might have half a chance to suck me in. Hoving over a e-mail can often reveal it's fake without you even going there, look for spelling mistakes and e-mail address they don't look official. If they're asking for money they're always fake. Βyakuya Posted January 20, 2015 Report Share Posted January 20, 2015 When I was a young kid in middle school who was the most gullible dumbass out there, I was on the school Internet and fell for the "1000th viewer = Free Prize" scam. They offered stuff like the Wii, which I still didn't have then, so I stupidly complied. Few days later after a scolding, I saw a limousine in front of my house with a guy in a trench coat and fedora asking for the address of my house. I didn't question his coming, but I assumed it was part of the scam, so I told it was another house nearby. They never came back again. I really dunno what those kinds of pop up ads really grant, but aside from stealing personal data, the rest of those promises seemed so clouded in suspicious mystery. Happened to me when Splitbark was among the rarest to see on the servers. Not because it was good, it was terrible, but because the materials were so difficult to gather in one place at the time. (Though I don't think they're as bad now; by that, not getting as many) There's a saying, "if it sounds too good to be true, probably is". He had forgotten to post the link to the specific flash game, right before I was going to search it up... I noticed there was a comment link of it. I was naïve and stupid... and clicked it. It pulled up a "FBI" Window telling me I had commited a crime and that I had to send money to a address as a fine. Either that or they would come to my door, ip address collected. I was scared at the time and almost sent the money, I then realized that I had done nothing wrong for the game was free (of course) and proceeded to report it to the cops. Friendship, love, freedom, justice, Seriously though…just about every advertisement saying "You have ____" . Some of them really piss me off though. Like the ones that have some IM thing like someone's talking to you as an AD. LIKE….WHY? WHO WOULD CLICK THAT? And then "YOU HAVE ONE NEW MESSAGE" flashing. Ugh. Finally, when I go to a download site and some of the ads say "download" with a button I've almost clicked them several times now. Clever little bastards. Some kind of Job Application thing where THEY pay you? Not sure, but what I was link to had all the red flags. It also asks for your paypal information or whatever? Apparently a lot of people are falling for it, essentially they're getting fake money (pretty much points for doing simple things) that they can't withdraw.
