Progenitor
Honestly, all jokes aside, I would start with Mario. Â Solidly High-Mid / Low-High Tier character that promotes solid fundamentals. Â Pretty much everything you learn from playing him can be applied to most others at a basic level. Tourmaline
Mario is actually very close to being top tier. Nowhere near mid. Try the characters yourself and see who plays most comfortably. There is zero point to the opinion of others if you have to force yourself to play a character and not enjoy the game anyway.
(GigaDrillBreaker)
Don't main anyone until you actually know what you enjoy the most.
Darj
I agree with the above 2. We could tell you to stick with any of the top tiers or whatever, but if you aren't comfortable with it, chances are you won't have as much fun. But you should totally main manly pink Captain Falcon. Βyakuya
Play with characters you like, and try to learn their move sets and properties. If you like how they play, then you can try to find and play other characters with similar playstyles. It takes a lot practice, but it's worth it if you devote time into their strengths and weaknesses combined with your tactics as you grow to understand the game better. Mario is the easiest and best character to start with for sure. Captain Falcon, Ness, and other similar characters might be simple to pick up, but characters like Peach, Ryu, and Shulk might need some acquired skill to advance upon. Flame Dragon
Charizard best character     And by that I mean one of the weaker ones       You should still do it. That or play around and see who grabs you. Either works.

GarlandChaos
Haven't played Smash 4 in a while, but I'd say go for Ike. He's pretty easy to understand, and a lot of his attacks can deal quite a bit of damage, especially his forward smash. I love his forward smash. <

The Amazing Avian
Just saying, if you play Captain Falcon and don't taunt, heel spike, side b spike, head stomp, reverse falcon punch offstage, perfect knee, and do needlessly cool and suicidal kill combos, you're playing him wrong.
