[Scarlight] [Hot] Red Dragon Archfiend

Scarlight

1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters

This card's name becomes "Red Dragon Archfiend" while it is on the field or in the Graveyard. Once per turn: You can destroy as many Special Summoned Effect Monsters on the field as possible with ATK less than or equal to this card's (other than this card), then inflict 500 damage to your opponent for each monster destroyed.

 

Hot

1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters

Once per turn, during your Main Phase 1: You can destroy all other face-up Attack Position monsters on the field. Monsters other than this card cannot attack the turn you activate this effect.

 

From where I'm standing, Hot seems almost totally inferior.

 

It can destroy anything, regardless of ATK value, but 3000 is a really high mark anyway.

It can destroy Normal Summoned monsters, but how many of those wouldn't be killed by 3000?

It can destroy Normal Monsters, but I can only think of 2 relevant ones (and tokens)

It prevents other attackers, and has to be in MP1, where Scarlight has no such qualms

 

What was Konami thinking with these two?

This isn't power creep.

 

While they were designed in different eras to fit the game differently, they're both still functional. This explains why SRDA looks better than HRDA on paper.

 

It's msot definitely a mix between format and decks. The most notable thing in Scarlight's favor is the ability to randomly game opponents, akin to cowboy.

 

Less relevant is that, for HRDAA, Scarlight means you can still swing with things other than Hot.

 

But this is, again, down to decks. HRDA is still fine, it's just not guaranteed to be better at a given time.

I've played around with a RDA Deck. The Decklist I based it off ran 2 Scarlight. I don't have 2 Scarlight, so I subbed in HRDA instead.

 

...I almost never want to play HRDA. Because while it's still a great card, it doesn't have as much merit as Scarlight. They both have pros and cons, but the way the game is, Scarlight is simply better.

 

Scarlight acts as original RDA. That means you can use it for Red Nova if you were so inclined. It destroys all SSed Effect Monsters on the Field with 3000 ATK or less. The con is that it hits your monsters, too. But it burns the opponent 500x, even if you blasted your own monsters, which is fantastic.

 

Hot Red blasts ATK position monsters, and that's the flaw. It only hits ATK Position. Scarlight hits ATK or DEF, with the weakness that it only works on Effect Monsters that were SSed, so Normal Monsters, or non-Effect Rituals/Fusion/Xyz/etc are immune, as are monsters that were Normal Summoned or Tribute Summoned.

 

Scarlight also isn't as restrictive of who gets to attack the turn you use it. So Scarlight has much more damage output, and can be comboed with the evolved HRDA Synchros, such as Bane's revival effect. Bane's ATK is higher, so Scarlight won't kill it.

 

Both good, and leagues better than the original RDA. But Scarlight is a bit more potent. I have come across situations where HRDA is more useful than Scarlight, but that's usually only when the opponent has stronger ATK position monsters than Scarlight.
