Most favorite deck types?

Recommended Posts

So as you probably already know, this is just a parallel to the "most hated decks" thread. I had posted there and started to wonder how many decks do I actually like currently and what others like as well. I'll try not to judge (even if your deck kills me inside).

So for people that know me already... you'll know that my top favorite is.....

1. Raidraptor

At first I wasn't really fond of the cards or even Shun in general. All the way from the start of arc v up until Shun's duel with sora (which made me flip my opinion 180 degrees and gain a new favorite monster in Revolution Falcon) but now that they've developed they became a deck I really love. They also abuse the RUM mechanic which i've always loved about the cards of Zexal but sadly making a RUM deck would always become inconsistent unless you used the Utopia Engine (which I hate). After the duel with sora I pretty much became a Shun fanboy with the desire to make a fun working (and hopefully compete with the meta) RR deck. I'm also a sucker for xyzs which is another reason I love them so much, now that being said my next favorite is....

2. Star Seraph.

Another deck I hated at first due to the fact that Zexal's horrible writing only allowed 3 to be revealed and those 3 couldn't make a deck together... I tried and failed and gave up. Now i'm one of the minority that liked Zexal but you have to admit their sheet writing really ruined the potential of many decks and this was the case for this deck until... SCEPTER AND SCALE AND CHAIR came out AFTER Zexal ended. With that my fun began with the Pure Seraph Build I made. Nothing's more fun than a delteros popping everything on summon while your opponent can't do a single thing. Again i'm XYZ scum so I fell for this deck the minute scepter came out. Although I have a serious hate when people try to mix it with backrowtellas, I honestly hate that.

3. Burning Abyss.

Don't like them as much as the other 2 nor am I particularly good with them, but I like their effects and I like how it's pretty much the only "Rank 3 deck" that is meta and can actually do serious damage with proper playing. Of course they've gotten a synchro and fusion now but they originally were a powerful rank 3 deck that you could run astral force in. I don't really use them because I tag often and this deck blows in tags unless your partner is double decking it with you. And personally I think double decking meta decks is lame and I loathe people that do it with decks like Qliphorts,Nekroz or even LS (even if LS isn't meta).

4. X-Saber

This is one of the only synchro decks i'm any good at and it's the one I love the most. I didn't care for this deck AT ALL until young yaiba pretty much showed me the ways of the deck. After his duel with gong and after saber reflect and Emergency Convocation came out I started to use this deck. It's honestly fun how much swarming you can do at a given time and all. Also Gottoms is easily my favorite monster from the deck and E Convo is my favorite spell in the deck because it can bring back gottoms. Darksoul shenanigans are amazing and discarding an opponents hand is awesome (unless they're running BA or Shaddoll). This is sadly another deck that I can't run in tags that often because the set up needed most of the times requires Emmersblade or Darksoul to die and if your opponent the following turn does nothing and the next opponent kills it. You get nothing out of it. This is a deck that I'd gladly double deck with someone.

5. Blackwings

So this is the other synchro deck I like and while I'm more of a RR guy I enjoy tagging with my buddy when he uses these. It's just bird on bird action and Force Strix can be shared between both decks. Fast and easy synchros and with the new Rakiri the Sudden Shower it makes for immense beatdown and clearing. Sadly my like for these kinda went down because (I don't mean to fire shots or anything but...) the BW fans keep attacking the RR fans for "being a discount BW deck". That's funny. I don't remember Rank Up Magic existing in 5Ds... delusions maybe? Regardless I will always hold a soft spot for this deck and will play it from time to time. I just wish Crow would play better cards so I wouldn't have to rely on Konami to make the good ones (like they had to do with Star Seraphs). Hopefully his duel with Shun will FINALLY reveal some good MAIN DECK BWs to use.

So what are your favorites. You don't have to go into as big detail but I was bored so I ended up going overboard XD.

Performapal. I adore the feeling it gives, which is very much akin to Yuya as a whole. Transforming, exchanging, taking the stage, working together, it really tries to perform. It's also shifted constantly in how it plays, with only DOCS+ seeming to settle.

I like D/D/D, but they feel so much weaker, and felt like they got left in the dust with time, honestly. Hopefully the structure changes that.

Shaddolls are a deck I very much respect. I'm not the greatest pilot, but it's so versatile in how it can be built, and it really is just a very welcoming deck that encourages smart card choices.

Hunders and Fableds are decks I have a soft spot for, but... they're pretty terrible.

I like decks that give you many options and can make big combos. Bonus points if they have little cute things. My favorite of all times would be Wind-up (without the Hunter Loop). For the current meta Im playing ritual beasts. But would totally play Wind-ups if Zenmaity comes back. (I still play them, but only on casual matches.)

So yeah, I dont like things that are too linear or easy, like Monarchs for example. Their plays can be long, but they just lack that feeling that you are controlling the deck and not vice versa imo.

I dunno if you guys ever guessed, but I love the SuperHeavy Samurai deck. After seeing how cool it was in the anime, I tried it out myself, and it's a lot of fun. And it keeps getting more and more support! It's a thinking man's deck that rewards clever plays and mind games with your opponent. And it's a viable Monster Mash deck. And that is cool.

I have a soft spot for Zombies as the first deck I ever played was the Zombie World structure deck. But I'm not a massive fan of them.

Anyway, I love LP/Banish Psychic-Types. For a long time, they were the deck I played - infact, it was only until High-Speed Riders came out that I was playing a mediocre (I have no E-Tele) Psychic-Type deck. I ADORE the artworks and the playstyle.

With the release of High-Speed Riders I bought a box of them and got a new deck: PSY-Frames. I really love them as they are Psychic-Type and good. And I love the super-reactive playstyle.

I also really like Insect-Types. I would use an Insect-Type deck but I just don't have enough to make a decent deck out of.

I like making decks that revolve around specific cards I like. Dice Jar, Mutant Mindmaster, Helpoemer, etc.

Random archetypes/decks that I like include roids, Cloudians, Igknights, Spirits, Geminis, Earthbound Immortals...

Thinking about it, I love a lot of decks. More than I hate.

Even though they're terrible these days, one of my favourite decks is Dragunity. They got me my best ever record at locals ages ago.

Other decks I've been fond of/like include:

- Evilswarm

- Hieratics

- GISHKI (I blame a friend of mine at locals for this)

- Resonators (Still haven't found an optimal build for them yet though)

I have loads, and most of them are basically here because I had a lot of success with them.

Blackwings - my first good deck, and I played it over and over again in later formats. I really like the designs of them, but I think the main reason why I like them is just nostalgia.

Agents - After Shaddoll the most fun deck I played, and was during a really fun format too. I won about half of the locals I entered with the deck and I just really enjoyed playing it all the time.

Dino Rabbit - It was hardly a very fun deck but it was the first time I had some proper success. I got my first regional top and won a pretty major local event with it, and I actually found the mirror a lot of fun, more fun than most matchups, because of all the playing round backrow and stuff. It also helps that I decided to make the deck when I was at YCS Bochum so I got to talk to some really damn excellent players (specifically Hoban and Jack Bruun, who had just won the previous YCS with the deck) about it, and I think it did make me slightly better at playing Rabbit than most.

HERO beat - Played it for ages, won many locals and eventually I got the deck in more or less max rarity which was really cool.

Shaddoll - Probably my favourite deck of them all, I really enjoyed all the interactions it had, especially in the mirror and in the Nekroz matchup, and it's the first deck that I feel I really understood properly. I've made it no secret on here how much I love the deck, and the success I had is more a side bonus than anything. I really hope it's not hit hard because if it isn't I'll play it again.

Ritual Beast - I don't really like how it plays but I really love the art on the cards. Rampengu and Pettlephin are cute as funk and Zeframpilica might well be my favourite art of any card, not least because the foot of the penguin goes into the effect box.

edit: honourable mentions to Inzektors, T.G., Frog Monarchs, Gadgets and Jurracs.

Genex are my pet deck that literally cannot function because they're so disjointed.

My decks that I actually play are Evols, Lightsworn, and Machina. Mainly the first two. Evols cause some stupid annoying situations for the opponent and I love the idea, just wish they had more actually good tiles and more usable level 4 saurs. They really don't need more Zars because the 3 they have are already amazing. Lightsworn I like purely because of how rage-inducing they can be, as well as how quick they usually make games. Machina are just the first deck I really became accustomed with, so I have a soft spot for them in my heart.

Ghostricks. They're just adorable and have a pretty cool concept. Also they're the ones who got me back into YuGIOh, so extra points for that. And they're one of the decks with the most possibilities i've ever played. And the fact that they're pretty good and annoying at the same time makes it all better. And it's my main deck irl ( i would love to test it in a tournament)

Harpies. A deck i would LOVE to build irl, one of the few winged beast archetypes and, if played well, can be devastating, being able to be both a rank 4 spam and bring out rank 7s. And harpies are cool mythological creatures, so

Aroma. The deck that brought gaining LP back to life, i want more support for it, since it has some of my favourite artworks in the game. NOW RUN BEFORE I TURN YOU INTO A SCENTED CANDLE

Gusto. SUCH PRETTY ARTWORK. And they're basically unstoppable, being kamikazes and gaining advantage because of that. Me GUSTa (someone stop me)

Raidraptors because they're amazing and shut up.

Destiny Board because it's the coolest way to win.

Number 7 deck because Number 7 is pretty much the best card in the game.

I like Shaddolls in general because they have so much possible synergy with all kinds of things, but decks focused entirely around them and using all the Shadow Games and Core and stuff I dislike.

Recently have come to love Cyberdarks and wish they'd get some actual support rather than just being 5 cards.

Old HEROs pre-Masked I am also a fan of.

Lastly, most controversially, I quite like Qlis, unfair as Towers is, simply for making monsters like the god cards, the wicked gods and Gate Guardian a bit viable.

My top favorite are Shaddolls:

I like their puppet theme, playing Fusions was and still is refreshing, and they are related to the DT storyline, which I am following; they are flexible, and even competitive. I really enjoy how they can mix with a wide array of engines and shift their play-styles, such as control/stun with Hands or Traptrix, OTK with Chaos Dragons, power plays with Seraph, or more stability with Clowns, and each have or had different degrees of success, depending on the metagame. And despite them being a "floater" deck, the Flip effects, the Fusion mechanic and Synchro Summons through Falco gives the archetype an edge and makes it more interesting by enabling relatively explosive plays.

While I have an interest on Qliphorts and Tellarknights, I actually haven't played the former yet, and the latter are somewhat bland on their own, so I wouldn't exactly call them my favorites.

Those aside, I don't really have any favorite archetypes. On the other hand, I'm more of a fan of engines and mix & matching them. For instance, the most competitive deck I played before the arrival of Shaddolls was an Artifact Traptrix variant, which is, well, a combination of engines. I like Machinas but, again, they are more of an engine rather than a formal archetype or deck. Likewise, I could say I like Artifacts and Traptrix, but I would only be referring to their engines, rather than the archetypes as a whole. Heck, even when I tried Tellarknights, I did with an E-Tele engine mixed in, just to spice them up by a bit.

This also should explain why I like Shaddolls, as they are flexible enough to mix with engines.

As I recall, the deck was insanely expensive, due to using a large number of promos. Like, half the deck being promos.

Well, it's Pendulum Wizard that's the really expensive one. You can still get away with just running the 3 Structure Deck and adding Insight and it'd work pretty well. It'd be subpar as sheet, but it's there.

More or less this.  Just like how Shun drove me to hate Raidraptors, the manly Gongenzaka turned a mild interest in Superheavies (this was back when there was only like three cards in the archetype) into them being my favorite deck once I got around to playing them.  Despite having no Spell/Traps, they're pretty strong, and pulling off swing plays with Glove, Benkei, and Soulbuster where you just slap somebody in the face for 7000 damage has got to be the funniest sheet ever.  They're not invincible of course, but damn if they don't go down without a fight.

Until somebody flips Skill Drain.  Then you just pray that you can topdeck Thief.

In no particular order.

Ice Barrier - Basically for the field control aspect and ease of summoning at the time. Though, Brio got banned because they were too generic (and Trish only recently got let off the ban chain). Oh yeah, and partly stall stuff with Defender.

But yeah, they are a bit slower nowadays after some testing.

HERO - I guess because of GX and stuff that I got into them. Nowadays, I haven't touched them much outside of Shadow Mist into Dark Law.

My character in an offline fanfic uses a Synchro variant, but how that'll work for them, I don't know.

Majespecter - Easy to run, more/less cute [i have some doubts on Frog] and competitive enough to do what it needs.

(YGOHack needs to fix Frog's coding though; it's broken, as in not working. That, and reorder the BOSH cards so they don't conflict with DOCS things he wrote)

I'd build this next month once DOCS comes out, but Eccentric and Dracoslayers are expensive as hell, so might have to make some modifications to my usual build.

(It would be nice if dealership got the Japanese version of Eccentric, since common and should be easier to get)

[Probably going to get chewed out for this, especially after they got Supercell this time around]

Yōsenjū - I use a standard variant of this Deck, so playstyle should be obvious. Also because of mythology stuff.

Testing out the version that uses Lose 1 Turn, although it needs work (other ones don't).

Mecha Phantom Beasts - Airplanes are cool, plus it was a technical budget Deck IRL because of MP14. Too bad Dracossack is expensive as hell still, because that is indeed the key card.

I LOVE U.A.s. The mechanics of them are just so unique, what with the swap-out gimmick and all, yet the archetype is just SO underloved by Konami. Where's our next level 4 or lower, goddammit?!

Plus it's cheap to build + works. (I think I spent less than $8-10 on the bulk of the Deck)

But yeah, lack of more Level 4 and under hurts a lot. Or hell, even a CyDra for them would've been nice.

They were supposed to give us hockey ones in CORE (if Penalty Box was anything), but they decided to make Kaijus instead.

I had a ton of fun with Plant Synchro back in the days, and with Flamvells mixed in with other strategies, too.

Decks I never played but always found super fun to play against and loved the amount of options they had were the original HAT and Shadolls.

Decks I still try to make funcion even nowadays are Zombies, Insects, HEROs (pre-manga variants including Neos and Evil) and the Dinosaurs from the GX era.

There are a bunch of other decks I do like, but those are my favorites of all time.

I've mentioned Dark Magicians before, but those are more so for the art so I don't think they count towards my list here.

Trains - Obvious. This deck is basically my baby; built it when the only cards were Night Express, Hustle, and Special Schedule. I've seen this deck come a long way from nobody-rogue to something that's made quite some tops. Overall, I love the versatility this deck offers in what you can do and what options you have access to. Thanks to the very generic nature of these cards, there's a lot of build variances and different strategies you can do. Plus, its playstyle of huge beast-sticks with aggressive plays really resonates with me.

Superheavy Samurai - Almost a "guilty" pleasure; I have a lot of fun playing this deck. It may not be meta, but it promotes a highly mental game and really rewards clever plays the most. Generally a super interactive and fun deck if you want something that gives you something to think about.

Synchrons - The sheer hamminess of this deck is something I cannot let go of. Super fun to play, and the ridiculous plays and moves you can do really get your blood pumping.

Shaddolls - Out of the meta decks, I've really like Shaddolls for their versatility and open design. There's a lot of possibilities in plays and builds that you can do with these cards, and it's a deck that rewards cleverness in both its playing and its building. Very enjoyable to play and build.

Ultra Athletes - I must confess, a huge part of this is for the art, but I also really appreciate a lot of the playstyle. An easy way to describe this deck would be like if you took Number 81 the card, and made a deck designed off of how that specific card is used and played. Offensive and strong during your turn, and defensive and steadfast during your opponent's turn. Overall, I really appreciate versatile decks with varied strategies, and I have been forced to think outside the box often with this deck.

Honorable Mentions - Scraps, Gradius, Machinas, Dinomists (need to test/play them more), Quantum Pilots (I have a strong feeling I'm going to love this deck), Bamboo/Artifact/Vylon

- "Arcana Force": I like this deck because their artworks and designs were so cool. 3 of the boss monsters are pretty strong too (The World skips the opponent's turn, The Light Ruler returns a card from grave when killed a monster or negate spell/trap by losing 1000 ATK, The Dark Ruler can attack twice or pop the field if it was defeated.) Too bad three of them are expensive as hell!

- "Ghostrick": One of my most favorite Deck in my life! They're so cute (especially Specter) and their play style seems pretty fun!

- "Toon": Cute and easy to swarm with the Nomi Toons! I never touched them before the release of Toon Kingdom.

- "Kozmo": Easy to run! Pretty cool design! Easy to create an OTK!

- Honorable mentions: Fluffals, Quantum Pilots (I have a strong feelings I'm gonna like this deck once they've released), Burning Abyss, Trains, Butterspy, Vampires, Shaddolls, Gishkis, Nekroz, Mejespecter, Shaddolls
